 Death is only the end if you assume the story is about you. She flickers between this world and the next. This world is painful, loud, and cruel. But he is here. He is flesh and fire. She cannot take him with her for many, many years. But as much as it hurts, he's worth it. Her life was ripped from her when she was little more than a hatchling. When the reaper came for her, she pleaded and pleaded to stay. She would do anything; she begged. He must have had a twisted sense of humor. With a knowing smirk, he told her there was a way. As a reaper, she cannot truly belong to either world. The dragons who she has guided to the afterworld look at her with pity from nirvana. She longs to join them; to rest. But being who she is, she can never rest. The pull to return to the living is a constant itch; she must help the dying pass. Until she arrives to guide them, they suffer, unable to move on; she feels their suffering too. In the living world, everything intensifies. Too bright, too loud. So much pain. She feels the pain as if it were her own. All the pain. One look at a dragon, and she knows all the pain he will ever feel. She knows how he will end; and she knows when he does, she will be there to take him home. He is different. When she sees him for the first time, she is collecting his father. He is curled in the corner of the cave. His sorrow radiates off him in waves. But even more overwhelming, his fear. He doesn't understand where his father will go. She encounters scared, distraught young dragons every day. But this one is odd. When she looks at him, she isn't struck by all his future pain and eventual demise. It's like looking through a fog. She doesn't know why she decides to reveal herself to him. Perhaps a part of her knew; she is omniscient, after all. When he looks into her eyes, the world shifts so drastically, she actually gets dizzy. It's the moment the world was waiting for. Fate falls into place. The fog in her vision clears; but rather than endless pain and misery, she feels glowing happiness. His long, long life- always glowing. Of course, there are hard times. There are lots of lonely times. But overwhelmingly, happiness. And when she sees the end, that is the happiest moment of them all, for he will know that he will never have to leave her side again. |
