Opal tapped her claws nervously against the ground as she quietly stalked up to the den entrance. Omen and Portent, the two great gaolers who were signs of her den's curse coming to fruition, stood to either side of the tunnel of branches and roots. They didn't blink, just stared unmoving, their expressions a curious combination of curiosity and despair. Between them rested a single egg, and on that egg a note.

Opal looked to the silent entrance just beyond them. Horror prickled her skin as she took one step and then another, her legs tense and ready to spring. She hoped it would be a trick, that someone, anyone from her lair would jump out at her, scare her, and tell her it had all been a trick.

But all was still silent as she approached the egg. Opal carefully took the note and read it.

"Take this egg and go to the border of Dragonhome. There, you will find the tavern of which you have heard so much from Barnacle. Only you can save us, Opal. You and the hatchling who rests within this egg. Below you will find everything you need to gather in order to awaken our matriarch and the others.

Take care. I know you can do this.

Opal looked up to the gaolers and stumbled as she noted the blue tail hanging from one of their horns.

Ruffle.

It had all happened so fast. No, it wasn't supposed to have happened at all. But there Avna rested as proof, and inside Ruffle would be sleeping with the rest, just like Gaia. Tears in her eyes and determination flooding her soul, Opal lifted the earth egg against her chest. She would see this through. She would save them all.

And finally, she would prove her worth not only to them, but to herself.
