Atlantia had never been the sort that would conform to what he considered worthless standards. Either he thought it was the right thing to do, or he would not do it at all. Albion would often say this was what had first drawn him to Atlantia; the boldness of the pearlcatcher was striking, especially in the face of such bleak times. Atlantia found Albion's earnest nature refreshing. It was a mutual admiration, so it didn't come as a surprise to many when the two began to date.

It was never a whirlwind romance; these were not times to be caught up in such things. They were both the busy sort, Albion always in the lab, and Atlantia researching the local marshlands in search of magical leylines. They instead found a quiet sort of comfort in each other, curling up every night to speak of their troubles candidly. It was soft, quiet. The sort of love that normally came after years, and Atlantia was endlessly thankful for it.

Their relationship was one of the few things that helped him keep his sanity over the next few years while it seemed like the rest of the clan was following a slow descent into chaos. No longer did he find himself approving of Philomena's methods; as she grew more desperate, she only disrupted the natural order more, and it left him fearing a catastrophic, irreversible damage. Atlantia was certainly not an expert in many things, but he did know the land of the home he loved, and he knew it was not normal for the roots of the marsh weeds to be stained with tainted magic.

However, his words of concern fell on deaf ears–even Albion was unwilling to give in to his pleas. He insisted that Bessarion was incredibly close to a breakthrough, and stopping now would practically be a crime for science. Albion was lucky that Atlantia loved him so much. Atlantia was, perhaps, not quite as lucky.

He never gave up his insistence that the two of them should leave before it was too late, but the earnest devotion and stubbornness of Albion that he loved so much worked against him now. As determined as he was to leave, Albion was twice as stubborn in his insistence that they must stay, and there was no way Albion could dream of abandoning the clan while the one he loved remained behind. And so, he stayed.

The longer he stayed in the clan, the more ostracized he found himself. Other dragons were starting to only interact with those that shared their beliefs, and he found himself stuck in the awkward in-between with only a few dragons that were willing to call him a friend. Atlantia quickly gave up on warning his clanmates beyond Albion, as they were clearly a lost cause.

And when calamity struck, and the shade consumed his clanmates, all he could do was watch as they tore each other apart, his own eyes dripping purple tears over those he lost. Even knowing that something would come could never prepare him for what did. Perhaps the shade never consumed his soul, but it never left him untouched, and all he witnessed that day stained his gaze for eternity.
