"Wander not far into the bramble deep, lest the living wood claims your soul to keep," say the elders of Ulalume. They whisper each word as if gravity forces them to speak, tearing secrets from their tongues for new generations to fear. Even those who let a touch of reverence into their voice do so guardedly, and perhaps it is wise. After all, there is no telling when the Maracine Fantoma may be listening.
These sly spirits rarely venture into Ulalume proper, instead keeping to the dimly lit brambles surrounding the clan. No accurate depiction of them seems to exist, and those who have encountered them swear up and down that their vision of the ghosts' forms is the true one. But how is it that bundles of elemental energy wrapped up tight can be the same as slinking ferrets with foxes' deadly charm?

There is no answer, but the truth remains that these apparitions belong to the same creatures. Some of Ulalume's scholars speculate that they alter their form based on their intentions, though others are certain the Mărăcine Fantoma are ruled by little more than impulse and whimsy. They seem so childlike, the way they tumble through the brambles, chasing swirling bursts of elemental light. If they possess motive or mischief, it appears without true reason.
Tell that to the bones among the thorns, though. Ulalume hunters rarely speak of the remains they find deep in the wood. Speaking ill of the dead is dangerous enough without speaking within earshot of spirits with power. After all, what else could strip a creature down to its marrow? What other being could conjure prickling vines where there once were none? The earth round the remains is always wet, dark and sated. No one touches it, save the Maracine Fantoma. |
