Szecsaa was born to be a Seeker.

Most Gaolers are born and raised in the prisons of the Fortress of Ends, but it had always been a fact that Seekers sometimes nested in foreign regions as they searched Sornieth for remaining Shade-touched artifacts and creatures. Offspring hatched from these nests, though possessing the power of other elements, pledged their allegiance to the Icewarden as their parents had. Each returned to the Fortress of Ends when it was time for them to choose an Order to be initiated and to receive training. Most Gaolers chose the Order of their parents, and in the case of Seekers, this created lineages of Gaolers born all across Sornieth with a variety of elemental alignments.

Szecsaa was one such Gaoler. Her parents, born in different regions themselves, met in the Starfall Isles while Seeking. They fell for one another, and under the tall flowering trees of the Starwood Strand, they laid one egg. But they could not stay together. Their mission was always first. It was common among Seekers who met in this fashion to part ways once eggs were laid, and for the mother to protect the nest and then her hatchlings as she continued to Seek.

It was this way for Szecsaa. Though her mother had only known her father for a few days before they parted ways again, she always spoke of him fondly, hoping that one day Szecsaa would meet him. Both knew that this was unlikely to happen.

Szecsaa chose to become a Seeker because she was good at it. Her eyes, glowing like pink orbs of light in their sockets, afforded her much better sight than any of her peers. She could see farther and in greater detail than they could. It sometimes became inconvenient to have glowing eyes if you wished to stay hidden in the dark, but she made up for that by covering them with her ample grey-streaked mane. This trick, coupled with the mosaic pattern in her coat that helped to break up her silhouette, kept her well-hidden when traveling.

Scecsaa was also great in close combat. It was unusual for a Gaoler to fight with their claws and horns, but Szecsaa preferred this. She could usually catch an enemy or attacker off guard by choosing to engage in a physical fight, and she nearly always won. She was quick, strong, and ruthless. She sometimes did not have to fight at all. One look at the sharp horns that framed her face, the length of her claws, and the deadly glare in her eyes as she rushed in was enough for most creatures to consider giving up.

Szecsaa made a name for herself by bringing back some of the most dangerous creatures and items held beneath the Fortress of Ends. She became an Overseer when the order of Seeker was disbanded, but was quick to return to her former posting when the order was reinstated.

It was night in the Foxfire Bramble, and the dark was oppressive. Szecsaa could see well enough, even with her mane obscuring her glowing eyes, but most other creatures would be hard-pressed to see a few feet in front of their faces. The conditions were ideal for two Gaolers to meet. Sornieth as a whole was not yet aware of their existence, and the Icewarden preferred that things be kept that way.

Szecsaa stood close to the location indicated in her last communication. Messages came directly from the Seeker-Warden through a small Runestone all Seekers kept hidden on them, but such communications were rare. For the most part, Seekers were left to their own devices. But she had gotten orders to come to this location, or rather, the small clearing that she had been watching from the trees, to meet a Sentinel for a new assignment.

A Sentinel, she scoffed to herself. The order of the Sentinels was tasked with protecting the Icewarden and the fragment of the Pillar kept deep within the Fortress of Ends. It was an important task, but as both were behind the defenses set by Sentries and sometimes other orders as well, the job was generally uneventful. Sentinels had a reputation as self-important bureaucrats who did little actual work, and the few that Szecsaa had met only reinforced this opinion. She recognized the name of the Gaoler she would be meeting. Sharhurith was positioned directly underneath the Sentinel-Warden, as such was bound to fit the stereotype.

It was not long before she heard footsteps approaching. They were very soft, almost inaudible, but Szecsaa picked up on them immediately. She could only see shadows moving in the trees across the clearing. Something was approaching, but even with her impeccable eyesight, she could not make out what it was. She watched cautiously as this disturbance reached the edge of the trees, and from the shadows emerged a Gaoler.

One look at his deep purple eyes explained the reason she could not see him approaching. Dragons aligned with Shadow Magic, if practiced enough, could easily hide themselves in this type of environment by bending the surrounding shadows and darkness to cloak their presence. Szecsaa was certain that most dragons would not have even noticed him approaching as she had.

She broke her cover and entered the clearing slowly. The Sentinel turned to her. "You must be Szecsaa," he stated, bowing his head in greeting. His voice was deep, but it was not the rumbling growl that most male Gaolers used. It was somehow soft and almost musical. She found it grating.

"And you must be Sharhurith," she responded the smallest bow she could manage. "Now we should leave this clearing."

"I quite agree." Sharhurith turned back to the trees and began walking. "We're heading Northeast. We should cover some ground before day breaks."

Szecsaa followed him silently for some time. She scanned the trees around them, keeping a watch for unwanted company, and watched Sharhurith walking a short distance in front of her. The golden shards of bone erupting from his shoulders and flank swayed with his gait. His black coat had an almost iridescent blue sheen that was not unattractive, but his mane was a glossy, almost-white hue of pink. And he had not spoken since they began walking, not even to tell her what their assignment was.

In some ways, he was exactly what she expected. He looked like one who had not seen any kind of battle or hardship in quite some time, and he had an air of confidence that almost came off as arrogance. He was also not what she had expected. She had assumed that she would hate listening to him speak, but that was because most higher ranking officials she had encountered seemed to drone on about nothing when given the opportunity. Sharhurith was still silent.

Szecsaa had never minded being alone, but being in another's company for so long without so much as a word was becoming uncomfortable. She had to say something. Normally she would have just asked what was going on. Why could she not decide what to say? Was he so different that she just did not know how to speak to him? That thought seemed absurd to her.

Sharhurith's voice floated back to her just as she had resolved to break the silence. "Were you going to ask me where we're going, or just blindly follow?"

"I assumed you would tell me what I needed to know," Szecsaa retorted, a little relieved. "I appear to have been wrong." Her choice of words was a little reckless, but it would be a good test. Being in a different order, Szecsaa was not technically under this Gaoler's command. But his rank was far higher, and he could choose to assert authority over her.

The Sentinel merely flicked the tip of his tail in amusement. "We're going to the Viridian Labyrinth. The Western side of the Shreiking Wilds."

It seemed that she could relax a little. "Why are we going there?"

"Most immediately because there are rumors of Shade contamination in that region."

"We have Seekers in the Viridian Labyrinth, they have not reported anything."

"Because they have not found it."

"You expect to find contamination our Seekers cannot?"

Sharhurith twitched his tail again in what may have been annoyance. His voice had been conversational up to this point, but it took on a hard edge Szecsaa could have easily missed if she had not been listening closely. "I expect to try. Besides, I have a secondary mission."

"And what is that?"

There was a pause, presumably while Sharhurith considered whether he should answer her or not. "The Icewarden wishes our reach extended. You cannot deny that it is becoming increasingly more difficult for us to travel outside of the Southern Icefield. He wishes for a safe place to be established within the Viridian Labyrinth for our kind to congregate."

Szecsaa snorted incredulously. "The Icewarden wishes for us to build a prison in the Viridian Labyrinth?"

"No," the other Gaoler corrected, "a safe haven."

"What?" Szecsaa could not think of a reply for a moment. Gaolers did not gather for social events or live in dens like other dragons. Their sole existence was to contain remnants of the Shade and protect the Fortress of Ends. "The Icewarden wants us to build a den? A town? We maintain prisons. Am I expected to abandon my Search, settle down, and run a hotel?"

This made no sense to her.

Sharhurith's tail twitched again. "Your involvement officially ends once the contamination is dealt with. You are free to do as you please after that."

"So you're supposed to do this alone?"

"I am to determine the best course of action and implement it if I am able."

"That is crazy."

Sharhurith tuned abruptly back to her, stopping her in her tracks. His eyes flashed dangerously. "Do not question the Icewarden or his wishes," he growled at her. Szecsaa knew now why he spoke the way he did. Even to a fellow Gaoler, his tone was frightening. "You would do well to remember your place, Seeker Szecsaa."

Szecsaa bowed her head. He was right, of course. She could normally control her reactions much better than that, but she had been caught off guard by all of this information. "Apologies, Under-Warden Sharhurith."

"Accepted." His tone was soft again. "The way I see it, for the time being, we are partners. Question me all you like, but not our Deity."

The two of them continued on their way through the dark forest of trees and bramble. Nothing else seemed to stir. There was no moonlight that made it through the trees and vines above them, so it was difficult for Szecsaa to guess how long they walked again in silence while she pondered their conversation.

"Why me?" she asked finally. Given the nature of their assignment, it was easy enough for her to guess that Sharhurith, whether he was capable or not, was chosen because of his status. But she was merely a Seeker with no rank.

"Because I requested you," he answered without hesitation. "You have a reputation for dealing with especially dangerous shade-touched beings and artifacts very effectively, and a reputation for speaking your mind even when it may not be prudent to do so. As we do not know what we are going to find in the Shrieking Wilds, I thought both qualities might be beneficial."

All was silent again.

Szecsaa was still not sure if she liked this Sentinel.
