tall1.png The first thing Ethral remembered... was disgrace. Prying eyes staring at his dull feathers. Angered shouts at his parents for bringing forth an omen. How he'd buried his face in his mother's feathers, trying to make the noise stop.
Ethral was raised like this, being shunned, being talked about behind his back. Every bad thing that happened to the clan was blamed on him, the dull omen. Maybe it would have been best if his father had thrown him into the black river.
But then I wouldn't have made it here. Ethral looked up from the herbs he was sorting. Don't dwell on the past. You have a family. He cast a glance behind him at his sleeping daughter. She was safe. And she wasn't scowled at by vibrant, feathered serpents.
But the past can teach you how to keep this family. A small voice in the back of his head whispered. The past only taught me that I was nothing because of my colors. He shook his head. The night when he'd run away from his family, from his old life, that was the best thing he could've done. There was no going back to that.
Ethral let out a quiet sigh. He continued sorting herbs.
