MoonShine
Healer
”I can feel it… these visions, flashing in my head…”

Curled on a platform, books, scrolls, and other trinkets tossed around, could be found a Nocturne. She flits around the bundles of words she has collected, reciting things off the top of her head, in a way that makes it sound like she’s recited them off many times before. For, as one “blessed” by visions, she wishes to know as much about the future as she could.

Claws furl into a page, sharp eyes searching, searching. That was what life had always been for the one of the moon; searching. For an answer, perhaps; an answer to everything that has plagued her mind since the beginning….

In the shine of a moon in the land of the sun, curled amongst the many ruins, an unsuspecting egg glowed with great energy, before hatching into a new life.

But when the hatchling was discovered in the morning, there was no cause for celebration. Rather, startled cries and distress rattled throughout the hatchery, as her Pearlcatcher parents stared down at a Nocturne child.

Born into a clergy in the Sunbeam Ruins, the young dragon became quite acquainted with the one of the Eleven they called the Lightweaver. The clergy consisted of many philosophers and scholars, who dedicated their lives to worshipping and continuing the ideals of the mighty ruler of the Light flight. They were a cocky group, due to mostly consisting of Pearlcatchers, and believed themself to be above all except for the one they catered to.

Strict and at times ruthless, the clergy looked at the newfound Nocturne with disdain. She was an Arcane Nocturne; born to that of an Ice Pearlcatcher and an Arcane Pearlcatcher. Though the reason it hadn’t been strange for her parents to be of different flights was due to them pledging themselves when they came across the place of worship, rather than being born in it like a majority of the citizens. They had also arrived with the Arcane egg in tow, wishing to find a safe place for it to hatch despite the clergy’s strong views on their light egg purity.

Still, despite the two’s differing flights and the egg’s flight, it was believed that the egg would be blessed by the Lightweaver and come as a pure hatchling of the light flight; after all, it still had a few weeks to fully develop and hatch.

Or, so everyone thought.

Arguments arose as to what to do with the should-be-impossible; it was questioned if the egg had even been the Pearlcatchers, but they had insisted that it had been. The small one was an enigma among the clan; clearly, she had come from a place of… unnaturally, and for that, most desired to throw her out. It was clear to everyone she was a nuisance brought by the Arcanist, unable to be blessed even by their dearest Lightweaver…

Though, the leader of the clergy wished to keep her around. After all, their ruler would have not wanted them to throw a hatchling out to starve, even if it went against natural law. The Nocturne had been brought by the shine of the moon, and so, she was deemed “Moonshine”.

Moonshine’s parents had not wanted anything to do with her, as she had already ruined their reputation, and so, she was watched over in the resident nursery. It was clear something was off about the young dragon; instead of playing with the hatchlings who too thought she was strange, she would spend her time outside chatting to something that wasn’t there. The older dragons began worrying that she was more “cursed” than they thought, but everything quickly came to a revelation when the Nocturne exclaimed that she had seen one of the taller ruins fall apart.

However, it had been completely intact, which now concerns running around that the young one really was seeing things; until a day later, everyone was awoken by said building coming down.

The Nocturne had been blessed by visions, and the group learned that she had also been communicating with dragons that should be dead.

Whether or not this was a gift from the Lightweaver or due to her being an Arcane dragon was discussed by the elders. There had not been a psychic in the clergy for centuries; these abilities could prove useful, or very harmful.

They decided the risks of Moonshine’s powers were too large to encourage her to use them. After all, there was no telling if she was even guided by the Lightweaver. And so, through the rest of growing up, she was closely watched after and guided, being usually discouraged to use her power. She couldn’t help the visions that appeared in her dreams or the glimpses of ghosts; but as she was taught, she did her best to not pay attention to them. Still, she was treated as an outcast, some becoming afraid of her powers.

Moonshine was guided into becoming a healer, due to her high magic potential. Despite having many mentors and dragons keeping an eye on her, for the most part, she was lonely due to her unofficial status as a pariah. However, she did have one friend.

A dragon her age who treated her with great fondness, even after she was outed as a psychic. This dragon was a mischievous one and was a bit of a bad influence at times, but they were kind and humorous with Moonshine, treating her as any normal dragon. They bonded greatly and were each other’s shoulders to cry on.

Or so Moonshine thought.

The murder of a fellow member of the clergy was treason, and outrage struck at the sight of the body. An immediate investigation occurred… and it was one that led right to Moonshine.

Of course, Moonshine responded to this in fear and confusion. She would never lay a claw on a dragon!

But still, dragons were quick to put the blame on her. It was what the evidence had all led to, after all; evidence even Moonshine couldn’t refute. And so she was locked in a make-shift cell, watched over until the priests could console the Lightweaver on what her fate should be.

Anxiety filled Moonshine, as she hadn’t had any visions of this happening, or of what her fate would be. She had no idea what her future would behold; of whether she would be sentenced to death or some other horrid punishment, all for a crime she did not commit.

So when she saw her childhood friend again, some sort of relief filled her. For at least, if she did get sentenced off to her doom, she could say goodbye to the one dragon who cared about her.

But her friend only brought bad news. Through the cell, they muttered a confession.

They, an ever impulsive dragon, had murdered that member. They had stolen from them, and the friend, knowing that a report would do nothing in the biased clergy(a trait that even the Lightweaver stood against), decided to take matters into their own claws, and made Moonshine a scapegoat, framing everything on her. They already knew, after all, that Moonshine was disliked. They even said themself that they had merely been using Moonshine for their own benefit with her visions of the future.

And with the confession off their chest, the dragon who Moonshine thought was her friend slinked off into the night.

Despite the betrayal and the new heavy feeling in her heart, Moonshine never reported her friend. Though she reasoned it was because she knew the clergy would never believe her, the other truth of the matter was that she didn’t believe them when they had said they had never considered her their friend. Perhaps it was hopeful thinking, but they felt a sense of… sadness to their words, as though trying to get Moonshine to hate them so neither would be upset about the other if she did end up leaving, whether from just the clergy or from the world.

When the priests came back, they had their decree.

Instead of being put on the death penalty, as many, including Moonshine, had believed, the Lightweaver had taken “pity” on the outcast ordered for her to be merely branded and exiled, living in shame for her crime.

Though she was alive, that did not rid Moonshine of the shame and pain she felt of the hot iron being pressed against her wing. A large marking, one signifying great shame, was placed there, and just like that, Moonshine was sent into the wilds.

Due to the new burn scar, she could not fly for the day, and so spent the night resting in a ruin. When her mind was fully clear, a vision came to her; one of the high winds and fresh air. She felt a pull to it, though due to the clergy being so close-knitted, she had never heard of the other regions, much less a land of wind.

Asking around villages, however, proved results, as she was told about the Windswept Plateau. Knowing that to be the place she had to visit, Moonshine went on a long journey to fly over the Sea of a Thousand Currents before reaching the foretold land.

The windy lands were nothing like the clergy she stayed in the Sunbeam Ruins. The land felt so filled with life, fresh and windy, filling Moonshine’s lungs and soothing her sore scales. She took her time exploring the region, before stumbling upon a clan.

The leader of the clan, Gentlebreeze, recognized the young Nocturne as needing a place to stay and call home. And so she enticed her to spend a few nights with her clan, learning with the various dragons they hosted. Moonshine found herself fitting in with the clan in a way she had never fit in anywhere before, and as she grew more closer with the citizens, she found she had to consider something.

Moonshine had no idea how others would react to her psychic abilities, and so, had kept it a secret from every dragon she had met going on. But she knew there was only so much she could hide; and so, she told GentleBreeze about her visions, and told her the tale of the brand burned into her wing she had never told anyone else before.

To her surprise, however, Gentlebreeze didn’t reject her. She had told Moonshine that her abilities wouldn’t be of a shock to anyone there; that no one would turn her away in this clan, and that Moonshine was fine just the way she was.

It was that moment Moonshine decided to stay and help the clan; and she never regretted it, finally having a proper family.

With the healer abilities she has learned, Moonshine has proven an extremely helpful and useful addition to the clan, and her visions and ability to communicate with the dead had also proved a great service. She’s a studious dragon, who can often be found researching the ways of the world through scrolls and any other knowledge she can get her claws on.
