 SALT FORK 
(and Pumpkin Center)
Salt Fork is a blinding mix of old and new, fast and slow, substance and flash, modernity and fustiness. A tourist would only have to walk two or three blocks to encounter beautiful beaches, kitschy shops, shady docks, and an industrial water desalination plant.
Pumpkin Center on the other hand, is all flash. This brand-new city built for a brand new industry is still getting on its feet- and leaning heavily on its sister town to do so. |
Origins

Salt Fork was founded more than two hundred years ago, although it sometimes seems as though it could have been yesterday. The wooden buildings are simple and timeless, the docks are in perfect repair despite being choked by mussels and weeds and the desalination plant, the only recognizably modern building in the town limits, chugs along in the same unhurried way that makes you think it always has and will always continue to do. Pumpkin Center, on the other hand, was founded very recently by an entrepreneur named Pumpkin hoping to capitalize on a newly invented form of entertainment, the 'moving picture'. Although the fad faded quickly in most of Sorneith, movies caught on like wildfire in the north and production has done nothing but ramp up to meet demand. |
Present Day

Pumpkin Center went up practically overnight, with "Coming Soon!" posters being slapped on walls before the paint was dry. Although the goal was to make it a city in its own right, the place was built as more of a huge production complex than anywhere someone would live. So Salt Fork expanded, built more apartments and houses, modernized a bit, and eventually good ol' PC was no more than a district, which was fine with it. The less time spent of governance meant the more time spent on making movies. |
Points of Interest

Salt Fork is located at the north edge of the continent, right between Earth and Nature territories and considers itself unaligned. If the inhabitants had to pick an element, however, they would most likely pick Water. The heart of Salt Fork has always been the ocean. A complex system of docks, jetties, and piers jut out into the harbor, and tied up to them are ships from everywhere else on the continent. On one end of this stands a lighthouse, ready to shine into a rare foggy night, and the other end peters out into a white-sanded beach, strewn with shells and with the occasional home bellying up to the water, ready to risk damp carpets for a good view of the calving bicorns. Even farther down the beach sits the desalination plant, a squat, metal building whose workers use a combination of simple machinery and Lightning magic to churn out buckets of salt and barrels of fresh water, most of which goes right back onto the ships. The terrain here tends towards the Nature side, and the back end of town is covered by forest. Though there are warehouses by the docks and a good few businesses in the center of town, there are more houses here than you'd expect. Though some of them surely tend the spread-out farms to the south and east, the simple fact is that a good amount of the population lives in Salt Fork but works elsewhere. And where else could elsewhere be but Pumpkin Center, the city of backlots and studios, workshops and trailers, plenty of bars but precious few restaurants. This maze is the place (according to the sign) where dreams and movies are made. Dragons can live on their own time. |
