Zamzi

As the daughter of a priest, Zamzi was surrounded by the worship of the Eleven from an early age -- so perhaps her decision to reject them started as an adolescent rebellion. If so, however, she certainly made it a memorable and lasting one.

Zamzi does not believe in gods. Any gods, though she particularly denies the Eleven's divinity. She will admit that some hyper-powerful magical beings may exist, but she denies that they are "gods" deserving of worship -- and she is perfectly willing to spend hours in a semantic debate about the exact definition of the term "god."

Naturally, Zamzi's mother found her philosophy abhorrent, and the young pearlcatcher might have found herself in hot water had the influential clan-member Bartos not spoken up for her. Though considered a god himself at the time, Bartos found Zamzi's reasoning interesting and appreciated the care and thought put into her logic. He invited Zamzi to serve as his assistant in Clan Lukra's library, which became Lukra University's library.

Zamzi's strict adherence to logic makes her quite good at teaching, though she can get flustered, particularly when confronted with knowing and willful irrationality, which distresses her. Despite her dogmatic position on religion, she is surprisingly willing to listen to others' views, and gladly engages in extensive logical and philosophical arguments.
