- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "The time you’ve been given is not yours to choose, But what you do with that time is." • a b o u t • I don't think it surprised anyone that my sister was the favorite sibling. First born, first beloved, as they said in my clan. She would have been the favorite even if she hadn't been the way she was: bright, cheerful, and always open to have a pleasant conversation with anyone who asked. I wasn't like her. I was too shy, too reserved, too willing to let her have the spotlight. It didn't bother me. Some might read that sarcastically, but there's nothing but sincerity in that. I was content to let her steer us both. When she wanted to get into mischief, so did I. When she wanted to go exploring, so did I. When she decided she wanted to be a warrior, so did I. We were twin reflections in the same mirror, my sister and I, as we joined our older clan members in their duties. It started small, when we were young, helping to forage and fish for the clan's food. As we grew older, our tasks grew with our skills, and we started to train in combat, fight to protect against those who would harm us. She loved it, loved putting herself in the service of our clan, doing the right thing simply because it was the right thing. I was happy with smaller goals. Keeping my sister from injury or death was my major focus. Is it selfish? Most likely. I didn't care, though, not when she was in danger. She had been a part of me all my life, and I would protect her. It worked out okay for us, really. Without having to watch her back, she could dedicate herself wholly to her battles, a fierce and dedicated first defense to danger. Things were fine like that for a while. But we became still older, reaching the threshold of full adulthood, and it was time for the thing I dreaded most. As Guardians, we had to find our charges, the thing we were meant to protect for the rest of our lives. The thing that would become our other half. And that was my fear. For my entire life, my sister had been my other half. I couldn’t imagine wanting to protect anyone or anything more than I wanted to protect her. And I couldn’t… feel the draw that everyone said I should feel, the natural pull to go out and search for my charge. Suddenly, I was less than half a dragon. I wasn’t just a Guardian without a charge, I was a Guardian who had no charge at all. It was unthinkable, disgusting, and my clan reacted appropriately. I had already always stood in the shadow of my sister’s brilliance, and now that I was abnormal, well. That was the final straw. No one asked me to leave, but I knew I wasn’t wanted. My sister saved me again. She told me to come with her, on her search for her own charge. She’d be happy to have me along, keep me from being alone. So we left together, away from the judgemental eyes and the whispers. And again, I was content to let her go ahead, lead the way wherever she wanted to go. It didn’t matter that I was broken, that I was lacking a charge, because I had her to protect, and that was enough. She has always been more than enough.
