Cassus was doomed the moment he emerged from his egg. His mother took one look at his pale feathers and his oozing eyes before she bundled him up and carried him far, far away from her clan. She tucked him among the knotted branches and hooked thorns of a thick bramble bush, perhaps urged by a shred of her motherly instinct to grant him some kind of protection, before she returned home to tend to the more fortunate of her brood. Cassus spent the first few hours of his life frightened and alone, and hours were all that most hatchlings in such a situation would have been granted in the ever-present murk of the Tangled Wood, so rife with tricksters and bandits that even many adult dragons must proceed through its shadows with caution. He should have died there, forlorn and quiet in his bed of thorns with no parents to nurture him through those precious and tenuous first moments of life, and that was the fate his mother surely anticipated for him.

Cassus wasn’t supposed to survive.
