Ibtesam was found by scouts from Nehara in the midst of crossing through the outskirts of the Tangled Wood, near Wispwillow Grove after uncovering a hidden nest that had previously been occupied by Talonok crafters. Though he was clearly not born with his prosthetics, it seems that Ibtesam's past life as a full Tundra had ended abruptly during battle with one of the Talonok's raiding parties. He was saved, his missing limbs and damaged internal systems replaced with mechanical ones forged by a joint effort of Talonok and Centaur artisans hoping to develop a new line of defense against dragonkind.

Since he had been abandoned, Ibtesam did not know what to do. Initially he responded only with hostility to other dragons, but between Leonard and Azimuth, eventually Nehara was able to make contact and calm him down. He has imprinted strongly on Leonard, and only permits Leonard, Xan and Azimuth to work on maintaining his mechanical parts. Though he cannot remember his life before, Ibtesam experiences awareness just as any other dragon. Once he had been vetted and deemed safe by the scouts and Nehara's leader Achernar, Ibtesam declared it his purpose to guard Leonard against any harm, and follows him constantly.

He has positive memories of being cared for by his Talonok creators, and will not fight against them as a display of gratitude for the gift of rebirth they granted him. However, the Harpy influence upon his makers was very upsetting to him, and some of the more aggressive and terrible things he was commanded to do were at Harpy orders. As a result, he has a seething distaste for those masked warriors, and will fight them to the death if given the opportunity.

More recently, Ibtesam and Leonard have been interacting with one of the Nehara clan's Nature-allies, a dragon named Amery. The three have become very close, and Ibtesam has encouraged the development of this relationship, not just because he thinks it will be beneficial for Leonard, but because he has become increasingly fond of Amery since their meeting. This is rare for Ibtesam, and he guards this new friend every bit as conscientiously as he does Leonard.
