“So even among the dead, greed enjoys its life; even that great god Charon, who gathers taxes for Dis, does not do anything for nothing. A poor man on the point of death must find his fare, and no one will let him breathe his last until he has his copper ready.”
╭
Charon is a planeswalker tasked with ferrying lost souls across the river. According to Mal, his section of the river exists in the past and future, while Mal's section of hte river exists in the present. Charon's ability to jump between the states provides some geographical advantages as well, though Charon mainly uses it for chasing down the ones that refuse to pay. Charon also works as a ferryman, which despite his reputation, pays well. There are not many places to cross the River, and his particular section is teeming with toridae and feral maren. Charon has seen an errant deer stripped ot its carcass within seconds, and knows better than to ever step out of his boat. The times he dares to leave his boat, he visits Elysia or Coyote, to deposit or collect his pay. He has a special bond with Coyote, though her own reasons she entertains him are hers to keep, Charon has other brothers and sisters out there, however none quite possess the talents he shows. He doubts his parents know of the latent planeswalking abilites, but he has heard of others showing similar strengths to him. He keeps it to himself. Charon does not have a selected mate. None will dare step onto the boat with him. It is a wise decision overall, but it makes a man very lonely.

Chandra sighed and rolled her shoulders. The air was hot and wet, and the pack she was sitting on had started to sink into the marshy soil. Before her, Naja paced, muttering about prices and delays. Chandra shifted, placing her elbows on her knees. “Naja, you’re wearing tracks into ze ground. Sssit for a bit. You’re acting like zey’ll arrive any minute.” The bogsneak whirled around. “Chandra, the caravan is already over an hour late! Have they left without us?” The coatl sighed. “And if zey have? Zen we walk, until we find a way around zis river. Pacing is only wasssting your energy. Sssit.” Naja ignored her, instead wandering over to the ban of the river. Chandra had asked to stop for water, but the sound of the river muffled any travelling noises. The caravan could have passed by without either of them knowing. Naja stooped, swirling her hand through the water before yanking it out. Despite the flow of the water, stringy algae stuck to her, resisting any attempts at removal. “I though something touched me there.” Naja had finally sunk to her knees, even if it was to try and wipe the algae off her arm. Chandra had pulled her knees up in a feeble attempt to avoid getting wet. “I heard zat zere were maren in ze watersss zat try to grab and drown woeful travellerss.” Chandra mused distractedly, chewing her nail. It had torn slightly earlier and was catching on everything. “All faff mothers tell their cubs when they want them to get out of the water.” Naja wasn’t believing any of the rumours. Still, Chandra had seen her look of fear. Maybe she should move further back. “Zen what do we do? Keep moving? Maybe zere’s a bridge?” Naja had finally succeeded, though there was a fleck of algae on her cheek. Chandra feigned ignorance. “Why do we need to cross this horrid river anyway?” Chandra got off her pack, noticing in distaste how soaked the bottom had become. “My sssister livesss on ze ozzer ssside. Sshe’s not in good healths. If she passesss, zen I take care of her children. Besssidesss….” Chandra glanced at her pack. “I heard zere was a niche for metalwork.” Naja grunted at the weight of her own pack. “So that’s why it feels like I carry a set of armor.” Chandra glanced at her travelling companion. “If it makesss you feel sssafe, wear it. You are a bodyguard after all.”

Naja noticed it first, but Chandra was the first to say anything. It was dilapidated, and river debris threatened to swallow it. But it was still a functional pier. A chain attached to an overhanging tree stretched off into the fog of the river, dripping condensation into the thick sludge below. The river was calmer here, but the stillness only brought the stench and biting insects. Why Chandra’s sister had chosen to die here, Naja did not know. Picking at a scab, she flinched when Chandra broke the monotony. She had not seen the boat before. A hollow dragon with too-thin arms pushed a stake through the water, but his boat did not veer off course. The fog shrouded his features, and the sheen of his feathers glinted dully every time he rowed. Chandra hopped up and down. “Naja, look, he’s coming here! He’s come for usss” Her accent thickened as she grew more excited. Naja only shifted her pack higher on her shoulders. “How do you know he’s here for us?” Chandra whipped her head around to fix Naja a perplexed stare. “Naja, you no sssee? Look in ze boat!” Chandra was right. Naja couldn’t see. The ferry had gotten closer for Naja to pick out a pile of white rags on the bottom, but stains and use had long turned them grey. “Ho! Ferryman! Here!” Chandra had thrown down her pack at Naja’s feet, and was running towards the pier. “Ssessi! Ssessi!” The pile of rags lifted its head, and Naja got a strong sense of foreboding. The pile of rags was a coatl, and if Naja had known any better, she would have placed her long past the brink of death. The stench of algae and dead fish masked any further decay, otherwise she would have run sooner. Even so, she watched as the coatl curtseyed to the ferryman, even accepting his extended hand onto the boat. He pointed at Naja and Chandra turned around. Cupping her hands to her mouth, she cried, “Naja hurry up! He’sss going to take usss to Sessi’s home!” At the mention of her name, the pile of rags rested a weak hand on Chandra’s ankle, though she didn’t flinch. Naja backed up a step. The ferryman – a skydancer – pointed at Chandra’s purse, then opened his mouth. Naja had two choices. To save her friend and commissioner, or save herself. She glanced up from the coatl’s packs to see her friend’s open purse in her hand. Naja screamed, but it was too late. Chandra had slipped the golden coin under his tongue. It was happening just like her mother used to say. A ferryman lived along the river. Naja turned and ran, powering up the bank away from the boat. Dragons could not swim in the river, her mother had said, but you could pay the ferryman to take you across. Maybe she still had time, if she cut the chain that ferried the boat across the river. But there was a very important rule, her mother had insisted. The chain was too high up, and Chandra’s armor was far too heavy. She slipped, catching herself on a root. Her tail dipped into the water, breaking the surface. She hovered above the water, relying on that single root for her life. Chandra had sat down near the rags on the boat, and the ferryman had pushed off from the pier. “Don’t pay the ferryman…. Until he gets you to the other side.” A hand reached up from the algae, yanking Naja’s tail down into the water. She slipped off the root and landed with a meaty slap onto whatever had grabbed her. She lashed about, but her armor was too heavy. Another hand grabbed her. Naja tried one last time to scream, to alert Chandra of her danger. But Chandra had paid her price. And Naja had not paid hers.
