The End of All Things
"Death finds us all, in the end. You can't escape it."

Decay paused in his journey to regard the dragon standing beside a quiet, but fetid pool. Unlike most when he approached, the dark pearlcatcher did not flee or show any sign of fear. Instead, the dragon simply glanced in his direction and inclined his head in a silent greeting. “Have you been expecting me?” The pearlcatcher shook his head. “We simply do not fear death.” A mirthless grin formed upon the near skeletal skydancer’s gaunt face. “Yesterday is only a Today that has died.” Yesterday let out a soft chuckle, but it was a low, grim sound. “Days may pass, but the memories of every yesterday are eternal. We cannot die.” Decay moved closer, at least the grass here was already withered and would not suffer more because of his footsteps. “What do you remember, old friend?” The pearlcatcher turned pale, sightless eyes on the skydancer. “Everything. Since we came into existence, we remember it all.” Decay tilted his head, dark amber eyes studying his companion. He didn’t doubt them. They were both timeless, endless in their own ways. In many ways, it was his own shadow of a long ago existence, kept somewhere in the pearlcatcher’s memories, that gave him form in this place. But even then, his form was tenuous, hovering between something living and something dead. But he was Death, he was Decay. In him was the end of all things. Here in this place between places, he was content to ponder many Yesterdays past with the Keeper of Memories. After a while, he lifted his head, hearing a call only he could. He sighed and glanced over at Yesterday. "I need to go. There is a dragon whose time has come." The pearlcatcher simply nodded. "As it must for all mortal things. It is only natural to close the book once the final chapter is over." "Do you know them?" Yesterday shook his head. "No, but I will remember them." Decay nodded, and turned, vanishing into the shadows. When he reappeared, it was in a dim cave where an old dragon labored to keep breathing. Tired eyes looked up at him as he approached. "Ah... you've come at last?" Decay nodded. "I have. It is time." "Will it hurt?" "No, there will be no pain." He reached out and placed one slender, bony paw against the old dragon's head and watched as the light dimmed in his eyes and then his eyes closed as the body went limp. Soon enough all that would remain would be dry bones, and memories tucked away in the pages of Yesterday's book. He turned away and left as silently as he'd come. |
