scarecrow is a pearlcatcher, which means his memories are in his pearl; and morcilla was built by a pearlcatcher, which means his memories are in his earrings and the sheen on his eyes. and in his instinct- he remembers things there, too, but he doesn’t think scarecrow meant for that to happen. morcilla was built to call scarecrow master (and to tell him when it’s been three days and he hasn’t slept, because scarecrow does do that sometimes), but all the same crow nearly slips off his tongue. morcilla was not built to be a real dragon. but all the same, he thinks he remembers what being a real dragon felt like. vanparys offers free teacakes, one day, and morcilla runs entirely on instinct when he asks for two honey, without clove please because scarecrow doesn’t like it. scarecrow did not tell him that, when he was built. scarecrow did not tell him the pain of losing siblings- scarecrow had no siblings- but all the same he finds ruin crying in the market over an order of tea and bandages, and sits next to him, and understands. |

there is a picture frame in the house, turned to face the wall because scarecrow doesn’t like looking at it. morcilla looks at it, because he dusts. there are two dragons in the picture, and one of them looks like scarecrow, and the other looks like him. not exactly, of course. morcilla is not a real dragon. but the eyes are the same, and the rest of it is close enough. scarecrow did not tell morcilla to love him, but he remembers that, too. maybe that’s why. |
