Lost, scrambled, wistful

Bismuth was once a chemist of minor renown. He joined the field to discover the secret behind the unnatural origins of his species. Every day he tinkered with his flasks and potions, trying to duplicate some of the results that altered Baldwin. He made a critical mistake in his methods, however: the sheer volatility of the substances he worked with corroded his mind.

He grew increasingly frustrated as his memory and intellect failed him, and his goal grew further out of reach. He was forced to quit when his apprentice noticed his self-destructive tendencies and failing health and removed him from his post for his own good.

Now Bismuth lives without much purpose. Even if he discovered the secret, he could never understand it anymore. Callisto works with him daily to keep him from getting into too much trouble, since he tends to wander. On particularly good days, his mind becomes more lucid and he can share tantalizing fragments of his discoveries. The Empyreal's scholars are always eager to hear these rare bits of new information.
