Lost in the woods one day, Behyr followed the sound of a fiddle dirge. The sound was cold and gave him chills, but Behyr was drawn to find its source. He pushed low-hanging branches out of his way and came to a clearing in the forest. Lying in the middle was a young figure, curled into a ball, fast asleep. Behyr studied the tree line. Were there others nearby? The fiddle’s song was loudest here, and when Behyr finally laid eyes on it, he relaxed. He knelt next to the figure, whose face was scrunched up in frustration. Behyr had a feeling that this young man’s journey was not one he’d chosen to go on. He shook the sleeping man awake.

The young man’s brown eyes slowly fluttered open. When he took in the figure over him, he shot up, scooting back on his backside. His face changed from one of fitful rest to fear. From his collar, a little fey creature peeked its head out. Its eyes found Behyr, and the faerie zipped over to him to pick at his face. Behyr waved the creature away, asking the young man to stop the fiddle’s song. He learned that the fiddle could not because is owner, the only one capable of disenchanting it, was frozen in a curse. The whole kingdom was cursed, and Amir was in the forest trying to find a way to break it. Behyr told him he could help.

Behyr took Amir back to his cottage. It was in a small village, half in and half out of the forest. The entrance to the cottage was itself a tree, but the rest of the home was home-shaped. Behyr watched Amir turn around in a circle to admire the village. Amir’s wide-eyed wonder and curiosity was astounding. Behyr cooked him dinner, home filled with dirge and faerie, and Amir described the crone to him. Behyr’s expression turned dark, and he looked away with a sneer. The crone was notorious in the outskirts, for she had destroyed many homes, including Behyr’s first.

Behyr agreed to help Amir, but he cautioned it would take several months at the least. Amir eagerly agreed and offered to help as much as he could. Behyr taught him different potion ingredients and where to find them, and Behyr found that he enjoyed these excursions much more with the prince beside him. Many night were spent poring over books, crafting sigils needed for the needed spell. Behyr found he loved how clear and precise Amir’s penmanship was and how his tongue stuck out when he wrote.

One day Amir came home to Behyr with a victorious smile on his face. That smile was beautiful, Amir thought. But the spell was finished, Behyr exclaimed. Amir could go reclaim his kingdom. He and Behyr traveled through the forest, spending chilly nights curled together for warmth. They reached the kingdom in record time, and the two prepared the spell in the floor of the throne room. The statues were frightening. Behyr and Amir worked quickly, Amir trying not to concentrate on the efficiency of Behyr’s movements. He looked at the faerie perched on his shoulder. He was in love.

The crone was long gone by now, and was likely terrorizing some new kingdom. He would deal with her if she ever returned. When the spell melted and the people regained movement, Amir rushed to his parents’ sides, pullinging them in his arms. He motioned to Behyr, describing how he helped the prince break the spell. Behyr, the love of Prince Amir’s life, was deserving of a reward. The king and queen nodded, giving them their blessing. Amir took Behyr’s callused hands in his own and swept him closer for a kiss. They were married the next day.
