EDDIE

LONG ALL CAPS TITLE!

‘Eddie’ is a parasitic fungus growing on a distant planet - it burst forth from a flurry of spores [its siblings] after recognizing movement [astronauts]. It clung to the fabric of their space suits, and due to a crease in one of the suits covering some of it, it survived the trip back inside the ship’s decontamination shower. It lay dormant for a few months, growing and multiplying in one of the darker, uncleaned corners, until it was uncovered by Eddie during a particularly deep clean.

Due to its highly infective nature during this stage of its life cycle, it was easily inhaled by an unprotected Eddie - who was none the wiser after cleaning the small spot of ‘mold’. From there… no symptoms really even popped up. Eddie never figured he was sick - aside from the occasional nausea and dizziness and the amount of water he’d continually drink, he just figured he needed to exercise more. Surely the hunger that came with that made sense, right?

This went on for even longer - months upon months of the same thing, day in, day out. The rest of the crew had grown accustomed to Eddie’s usual goofy, bumbling attitude, most of them finding him entertaining while others thought he was annoying. Certainly not a threat, considering how avoidant he was of those in charge. It made sense he’d spend all his time watching the silent specimens in the specimen room; a massive collection of aliens and other extra-planetary objects. It was peaceful; something he’d never really want to have change, save for whenever they’d all get a chance to go home. Each night, he’d sleep soundly, and maybe it was unnatural to sleep so soundly while hurtling aimlessly through space. Nothing was assured, anyways - the waivers they’d all signed stated their bosses weren’t responsible for any deaths that might occur - and everyone had been okay with that.

'Had' being the operative word.

Because Eddie never woke up again, the thing that promptly slaughtered the entire crew was just something that’d perfectly replaced him - voice, smile, and all. It’d been done and over with within two minutes, its body splitting apart with a ferocity that rivaled some feral beast, just to rip apart anyone who wandered a bit too closely. The mess gone just as quickly as it'd appeared, further mass collected for its own continued survival.
