Elpis is incredibly shy--it's hard to coax even a complete sentence out of him. It takes a very determined dragon to get him into a conversation, and any stranger who tries to talk to him is out of luck. It's not that Elpis is unfriendly; he's actually quite affectionate, and would love to have friends. It's simply that speaking in front of others is as challenging to him as flying is to a frog: the words won't come to him, even if he wants them to.

Only birds get to hear Elpis be chatty. Elpis is much more comfortable talking to birds than talking even to his family. Though he doesn't get any response, he feels far safer telling a mother wren about his day than he does telling a sibling or a friend. Birds seem to love him, and let him approach; the boldest of them will even fly up and perch on his shoulder. Elpis wishes more than anything that he'll one day have a friend he can speak to so easily.

  • Elpis loves spring more than any other season because of all the birds being born.

  • He is absolutely amazed by ducks, and doesn't understand how or why they float. He's terrified for baby ducklings when they enter water for the first time, and always watches nervously to make sure they can actually swim.

  • Elpis is a wonderful listener, even though he rarely speaks; he'd be a lovely friend for anyone understanding of his shyness.
