It was a long time ago, but no one has forgotten; as a matter of fact, no one even knew. Only Vivien, whose old eyes no longer bear the light of reason, and Wymark, who does not speak to anyone except for his wards, seem to know anything about the matter. Harmonia never truly knew her parents. She was hatched from them, and then they went back to their old duties, never casting a second glance on her. But Ithaca, she who knows more than anyone else, understood Harmonia’s purpose before she was even out of the egg. She told her a tale as soon as she could understand it, and in that story, Harmonia discovered everything. Once upon a time, a guardian who was destined for the realm of the Gladekeeper found herself in the realm of the Arcanist. Under skies filled with violet stars, she bore two eggs, and from them hatched her two children, her heirs; Eris, the elder, and Eros, the younger. But a young clan is vulnerable, and the world is a dangerous place. The guardian lost both of her eggs, and then she herself was lost. The clan continued on without her. It was not until the Gladekeeper’s mercy brought her back that the clan was once again given the presence of its founder. Even then, however, nothing could bring back the children she had lost. She tried again, and again, and again, to find their souls. But no matter what she did, no matter how many more eggs she hatched, nothing could replace them. She took in firstborn after firstborn, looking in their eyes for traces of everything she’d lost, and saw nothing. And then, a long, long time after their loss, Harmonia came from her egg, and at last, the guardian- now a tundra- her mother, Vivien- gave up. She disappeared into the darkest depths of the lair, and Harmonia was left a confused, motherless hatchling. Melody took her under her wing, teaching her to lead where her mother no longer could. And Harmonia has learned to fill that role. But when Ithaca finished telling her the story of how and why she came to be, Harmonia’s new clarity was tarnished by despair. She has a large wingspan to fill, this little one, and although she is loved deeply by her clan, she does not know if she can ever truly separate herself from it. Kind, gentle, serene Harmonia. Harmonia, for whom this clan is named. Let us hope that she can find her peace one day.
