Biography
HellBeds
Cartographer ~ Pirate
Cartographer ~ Pirate
The life of a cartographer sounded like it would be full of adventure and excitement, exploration and mystery! HellBeds would bravely journey to the ends of the known world, personally drawing the very maps that other, less intrepid adventurers would later clutch tightly as they followed in his illustrious footsteps. His would be the first ears to hear the wind whistle through a newly cut canyon, to hear waves crashing on an unknown shore. His would be the first eyes to catch sight of fantastical new beasts and the first nose to breathe in the enticing scent of exotic jungle flowers.
Reality, however, proved far more mundane than he had thought possible. Who knew that walking straight off the edge of the map and recording what lay beyond the furthest reaches known to dragonkind could be so monotonous, so boring! Up one hill and down another, and stretching into the distance ahead as far as the eye could see, yet more identical hills. Striking off in a different direction might yield a normal regular forest interspersed with patches of standard meadow, followed by... (oh joy!) more of the exact same. And where were the strange beasts said to populate the undiscovered corners of the world? As a hatchling he had spent many an hour contemplating what wonders might lurk within the unfinished regions of his clan's maps, enigmatically labeled "Here There be Humans" in fancy swirling script, and featuring small drawings of fleshy two-legged monsters. He had considered at length what it would be like when he finally met one. Could it be trained as a pet? Did they taste good when eaten? He would bring home proof of having discovered them and have a whole species named after himself even!. |

Needless to say, the actual life of a cartographer proved to be an enormous letdown for HellBeds. Surveying unremarkable terrain and carefully noting the locations of rivers and springs did not, after all, bring him feelings of great satisfaction and accomplishment. But a fanciful hatchling does not grow into a practical dragon, and where reality failed him, imagination took over. A cartographer might not lead the glamorous life he craved, but a pirate—! A pirate could not help but garner fame and notoriety as he sailed the open seas in eternal search of worthy treasure. Why, it was their very nature! And he, he would be the most fearsome and notorious of all! Promptly abandoning his former occupation, he traveled to the Kelp Beds to seek his fortune and build his reputation as HellBeard the Magnificent—Terror of the High Seas—and Captain of the swift ship Pearly Shell, named for the nigh mythical green treasure shell he hopes to one day locate and claim for himself. |
HellBeard has big plans for his glorious future, and the first order of business is to amass a hoard of riches so great it would be the envy of any dragon. In the present however, he has managed to acquire little more than an exotic headdress and several feathered ornaments which he proudly wears as evidence of his success. One day, though, one day he will have a huge collection of coins and precious stones hidden away in his ship. He'll sail far beyond the edges of the map, journeying bravely through uncharted waters and hiking courageously through wild and treacherous terrain. There he will hide his treasure deep in an uncharted land. He will make his way back home, spreading rumors and tales of his great adventure and the wondrous treasure he left hidden out there... somewhere. Though the other dragons may scoff and call him an old fool, the hatchlings will sit at his feet and listen wide-eyed to his stories. They'll ask him eagerly how to find his cache of treasure, and then—only then—will he draw one final, mysterious map, a siren song for the dreamers among them. X marks the spot, dare you seek out the treasure? |
