Biography
Prologue: They Who Sleep
Segerstorm, the Deceased Memorial
Segerstorm, the Deceased Memorial
|
There is a small body face down amongst the crystal peaks that crown Mavenlark's head. The guards, at least, report it as "face down", for the purposes of paperwork and such. Murder makes for such mundane tasks, and necessary lies. The reality of it is far more gruesome - bits of the deceased have been scattered in such a haphazard manner that telling head from tail is impossible. "Never again!" is the Mother's rallying call when the time is appropriate for an official response to the incident; which, as any good leader knows, is sometime between mourning and anger. The Mother is a good leader, though too new for the dragons of Mavenlark to know whether or not they can take her on her word quite yet. She is right to say that it will not happen again, because it does not. The onrush of gruesome attacks for treasure or pleasure that have plagued Clan Mavenlark, home of the refugee, do not cease for some time of course. The Mother fights tooth and nail for the moment of peace she finally obtains. But the sacrifices end with the first fallen, face down on his spire. There was the trick. Nobody knew it to be a sacrifice. Flecked with dust and age, the statue of the fallen son of Skylark and Vachel, Segerstorm, sits safely within Vachel's workspace where he can forever monitor his mother's work. His likeliness, more life-like than he was alive - the few that dare to speak ill of the dead described him as a bit sickly - was commissioned by his grieving mother seconds after the news of his passing reached her ears. His ashes sit within, keeping the grieving taxidermist close to her lost child. No matter how often he is cleaned, dust still collects on his statue - perhaps a sign for the Arcanist that it is time for Vachel to leave Segerstorm in the past. But with so many questions on her mind (what brought him to the spire? What killed him? What plague haunted her life that killed most of her hatchlings?), and a general obsession with death, the statue remains on display, frightening and intriguing visitors to her quarters. Something strange has been happening with this statue lately, however. A small sect of dergs has taken to heckling Vachel, claiming that the statue is their god. They have been shooed away from Mavenlark, yet always find a way to return. Their motivation remains unclear. Whether in sincerity or as a cruel practical joke, since the arrival of these unwanted guests, Vachel's shop has been on security alert by Mavenlark's task force. She still refuses to remove the statue, much to the disgruntlement of the dergs assigned by Mother Bitestrith to protecting her. Nothing has happened so far, but you can never be too careful... |
