NOTES FROM FIELD RESEARCHER MIRALE:

Ah, the third child of the third clutch. It's been about three days since the first two hatched, and there are two eggs left unhatched. It's odd, considering the nests tend to always hatch at the same time, but I digress. The third child is one of Epitome's children that could be considered lucky, given it didn't face immediate rejection. When it hatched, Epitome seemed to feel indifferent toward it and left it be.

Left to its own devices, the hatchling started to explore the hive on its own as soon as it got a handle on walking. It couldn't fly, but its small size allowed it to walk between drones and squeeze through tight spaces without any trouble. I, on the other hand, had difficulty following it. As it went to the lower levels of the hive, it became necessary for me to don that cloak that dragons tend to use for pranks - Marva's Invisibility Cloak...or something like that. That paired with the concoction to mask my scent made me undetectable as I followed after it.

After a few minutes or so, it became apparent that the child intended to go to the very depths of the hive. My heart sank, knowing what was down there...but I wasn't about to interfere. I had to remind myself that the child wasn't a dragon. It wasn't a dragon hatchling, and shouldn't be seen as one.

The air became terribly cold the further down I followed it, yet the young drone wasn't even phased. It paused for a moment here and there, smelling the air or examining the tunnel walls...but ultimately kept going down. It wasn't long at all until the sound of something massive breathing deeply filled the icy air. We reached the monster at the hive's depths.

The FRIGID GENESIS.

A strange energy was hanging in the air around the GENESIS model's dwelling. It was almost as if it charged the very air, and surely Epitome's child felt it too. It hesitated, fur standing on end, as rigid as a board. It knew it was dangerous to proceed...and yet, it continued forward. As it descended the slope leading down to the beast, I found a perch to remain behind and watch what transpired.

From my perch, I could see FRIGID clearly.
Larger than twice the size of an Imperial, the beast laid there in a heap, presumably asleep.
The child's curiosity got the better of it, and it began to approach FRIGID's face.

Before I could even finish blinking, one of the GENESIS' many taloned hands slammed against the ground with enough force to nearly knock me off my perch with how it rattled the room. When I looked down at what it tried to strike...I saw Epitome's child stock-still between two of FRIGID's fingers. It was frozen with terror, fully aware that it could have been squashed right then.
Then, to both mine and the child's horror, FRIGID spoke.

I can't describe its voice with justice. Monotone? No, my voice is what one would consider monotone. Robotic? No, not even that. Loud? Somewhat, but...it didn't sound within the room. No, there's only one word to describe that monster's voice. It may not do it justice, but it comes close.

Cold.

"He's had more spawn? Interesting." It didn't speak the language of the hive. It was like its voice was sounding directly in my skull, not in the room around me. Like a telepathic frequency. "Why, when he rejects so many of you, does he keep having more?"

Loud creaking and groaning filled the air as FRIGID moved to stand, keeping its head craned low to better look at Epitome's terrified child. As soon as FRIGID shifted its clawed hand back toward itself, the child scrambled backward until it hit the wall.

"You are the first to venture down to my chamber, you know. Such curiosity results in the death of children like you." It spoke so coldly, so...so matter-of-fact was its tone that it made me sick.

"I have nothing to gain from killing you, nor do I have the patience to listen to your waste of a father wailing in despair over its 'perfect' offspring being slain." It then growled, a sound that shook the walls of its chamber, and its mental voice spoke once again. "Go. And if you have any sense of self-worth...you'll leave this place and attempt to overcome the corruption in your code."

The child then made a break for the slope it'd used to go down to FRIGID, running as fast as its little legs could carry it to get back to the upper levels of the hive. FRIGID watched it leave, and gave it some parting words; "I will be watching you, child."

As soon as the child passed by me, I made a break for the upper levels of the hive as well. I wasn't going to stick around and have the GENESIS model see me - that is, if it hadn't sensed me already. I lost sight of the child on my way outside the hive, where I finally caught my breath. Just as I was preparing to head back to base, I heard a howling roar from Epitome within the hive. Just seconds later, the child that saw FRIGID up close flew out of the hive's entrance, flying up and out of the gorge and in the direction of the Tangled Wood.

Well...it took FRIGID's advice, it seemed.

NOTES FROM RESEARCHER MATVEI:

I encountered something strange today.

I was walking near the border of the Tangled Woods and Dragonhome, scouting for any new Hives that might be located there, when I spotted the form of a Tundra Drone flying overhead. It was flying unsteadily, as if it the source of some mental conflict between rival Consciousnesses. I decided to follow it, to see where it was heading.

I followed the Drone for about three kilometers, before it fell from the sky. I tracked it to where it lay on the ground, and found that it appeared to be relaying commands from the position where it had fallen, yet seemed unable to move. It seemed as if the Drone in question was sentient, and struggling with another Consciousness for control of themself. It seemed as if they were losing the fight, and I felt bad for the rogue Drone. They hadn’t chosen to be controlled by the Hivemind, after all.

Since their attacker seemed to be only present mentally, I decided to intervene. I took the wavebox out of my bags, and set it up. It took a minute to unpack and for it’s systems to load, and by the time it was ready, the Drone seemed to have ceased its struggle. It was no longer relaying code, and didn’t sound like it was controlling its own systems anymore. I was worried that it was too late to save it, but I used the wavebox to block out local wavelengths anyway.

There was not an immediate effect, but after a few minutes I began to hear the Drone relaying commands once again. Then, their eyes seemed to focus, and settled on me. The Drone, despite being still immobile, let out a fierce growl.

I told the Drone that I meant no harm, and how I had seen their struggle and decided to intervene. I was not sure if they were capable of speaking, or even understanding draconic, but they watched me intently as I explained. When I finished, they looked away, and stayed silent. I asked them what had happened, and who they were fleeing from.

“Epitome,” They said, pausing for a minute to think of what to say next: “Paradigm.”

Epitome was a name I knew well, an infamous Consciousness from a Hive located in the Dragonhome, but I had not heard of and Consciousnesses by the name of ‘Paradigm’ before.

I kept asking the Tundra Drone questions, and discovered that she was the child of Epitome, and had attempted to flee from his Hive. She had been too weak to escape, and broadcasted a help signal to the Base Wavelength, which was picked up by a hostile Hijacker known as Paradigm. She connected to Paradigm’s Wavelength, only to find that Paradigm considered her ‘glitched’ and was set on destroying her. Her flight and motion systems were disabled, and had nearly been completely shut down when I intervened.

I asked her name, and she replied with what I assume was some sort of temporary designation she had been assigned upon hatching. “EPITOME.OFFSPRING.11.” I asked if she was called anything else, perhaps expecting some sort of nickname from father to daughter, but she thought for a moment before telling me that her father had called her a name before she left. “DEFECTOR.”

She had no Hive to return to, and she seemed different… less aggressive than other Hivemind dragons I had encountered closely before. Against my better judgement, I offered to help her recover, to keep her safe until she was able to survive on her own. She seemed to still lack the ability to move, and I felt bad for her. I’m technically not a member of any of the Hive resistance groups that set themselves upon destroying the Hivemind, so I didn’t have any obligation not to offer help. Maybe the Hivemind isn’t our enemy.

Regardless.

“DEFECTOR” thought about my offer of help for a minute, before agreeing. She didn’t seem inclined to trust me straight away, but I think she knew she wouldn’t survive long, paralyzed and vulnerable. I was able to carry her back to my camp in the Tangled Woods, and she is now asleep and hopefully repairing herself.

I wonder if she would be willing to help me with my research, when she is healed again?
