Bitter cold creeps along the edges of Shiver's earliest memories, making it hard to remember anything more. On the rare occasion when he slips into unconsciousness, he can recall hazy images of a body that looks eerily familiar, its head haloed by a pool of red and blanketed by softly falling snow. He tries his best not to think about what that means.

It was confusing, at first. Everything was unfamiliar to him—he couldn't remember his own name (if he even had one), or why he was alone in a place he had never seen. One night, as he lay awake with questions racing through his head, he held his hands up in front of him and realized he could see the night sky through them.

Shiver doesn't know why he's unable to pass on. He spends his days wandering the woods in search of answers, his wails echoing through the trees, hoping that someone will hear his cries.
