Her first memory was a hellscape.
Fire dragged itself through the trees, white hot tongues licking out to taste the fear. Choking smog billowed into the grey sky, smothering all those below. Cries of anguish sliced through the unbearable pressure from the roaring flames, rising higher and faster than any wings. Run. Her legs were small, pathetically feeble, but an instinct too terrible to name snapped the muscles and tendons into action. Embers and ash rained down upon her and she had the fleeting thought of a star filled sky. A ceaseless, howling crescendo nipped at her heels, threatening to overwhelm her. Hide. She dove, useless wings clumsily flapping of their own accord, drawn open by wordless demand. Claws scrabbled and chipped and bled as she willed herself smaller, forcing her body into a painful, unnatural shape. When the scent of decaying wood and forest earth overpowered the death and inferno of the outside world, her body stilled. Eventually she became too exhausted even to tremble, and slept. ~~~ Fevered nightmares became her new reality. Voices without living essence called to her, beckoning her from earth. She willed herself to become part of the forest, for tangling roots to ensnare her body and comforting bark to encase her whole. Soon, that unnamed and wordless entity inside whispered that all would be ending. Her physical self would melt into the soil that cushioned her sharp, aching bones. She wept with joy as she felt herself being pulled slowly, steadily away... "Save your tears. They'll do you little good." ~~~ |
