"All that you are is all that I’ll ever need"

______ ”No fair!” a baby Coatl yelps as she rises from her crouched position, turning her head to glare at the dragon proudly standing over her stolen kill. Beetle grasped firmly between her claws, Agaria grins triumphantly at Vinea, eyes shimmering in amusement.
“If you want to be an effective hunter you need to move much quicker than that! You also need to move much quieter, with all the racket you were making I wouldn’t be surprised if you spooked all the animals from here to The Gladeveins!” Agaria explains, padding over to her younger sister.
Scuffling her paws in embarrassment, Vinea mumbles to her sister dejectedly, “I’d probably do better if I could practice hunting real prey in the forest. Why do mom and dad let you go into the forest and not me?”
“Probably because I’m a few moons older than you, the forest is a dangerous place for a young dragon all on their own. Just try to be patient, one of your clanmates will take you out to the forest soon!” Grinning at her younger sister, Agaria waved goodbye and raced off across the campsite.
“Wait! Where are you going?” Words falling on deaf ears, Vinea grumbled in annoyance as she slumped onto the ground. “Great, Agaria is already the pride of the clan, going on hunting expeditions and patrolling the forest... meanwhile I’m stuck here doing nothing all day. My parents are the clan leaders for Gladekeeper’s sakes, they’re always sending Agaria out on important missions, surely they could find some use for me?” Irritated, Vinea trudges into the nursery, tail dragging limply behind her. Finding a suitable patch of moss, the baby Coatl curls up into a tight ball and drifts off into a restless slumber.
Awakened by a claw poking her on the head, Vinea flutters her eyes open, blinking a few times to clear up her blurry vision. Upon seeing her mother Solaris standing in front of her, Vinea bolts to her paws immediately. Wordlessly beckoning her daughter to follow her, the aged Coatl stalks over to her den, Vinea obediently trailing behind her. Upon entering her parents den, the hatchling locks eyes with a strange dragon she’s never seen before. Hesitantly smiling at the strange dragon (who, upon closer inspection, is a breed the young Coatl is unfamiliar with), Vinea yelps in fear as the stranger narrows his eyes at her in return. Snapping her attention to her father Ryujin, Vinea’s eyes brighten once more at the words he speaks.
“I know I haven’t really paid attention to you the past few weeks, and I offer no exuse for such terrible behavior,” Ryujin declares after a short pause. “ As an apology for my negligence, I’ve decided to give you a little gift. I know you’ve been eager to explore what lies beyond the camp grounds, and that’s why I’m going to give you a special mission, something I’ve never given anyone before...” Turning his gaze across the room, Ryujin nods his head to the strange dragon, giving him permission to speak.
“ I am Snowstreak, a Tundra of the Southern Icefields. Your father has asked me to be your guardian on a journey to secure more territory for his clan. If you wish to accept, we must leave immediately, no time for goodbyes.” After a moments hesitation Vinea nods her head in acceptance, only to let out a hiss of shock as Snowstreak suddenly races out of the den. Quickly snapping out of her stupor, Vinea hurries after him. Once the two were out of earshot, Solaris turns to Ryujin.
“I’m glad to see that worked out so smoothly,” she crooned.
“Yes, I’m pleased as well. Once Snowstreak abandons Vinea in the harsh snowstorms of his homeland and she is presumed dead, our clan will only have one heir left.” Ryujin hissed in an emotionless murmur. “It’s a shame that the laws of the clans dictate that the oldest heir of a clan that possesses multiple heirs must be offered to the Gladekeeper as tribute. “
Flicking her tongue, Solaris draped her tail over Ryujins back as she coiled around him. “Yes indeed. If only the Gladekeeper desired the youngest of the heirs, than we wouldn’t have had to worry about losing Agaria and that little runt could have still lived to serve the Gladekeeper.”
“I suppose so. At least the clan is now guaranteed to survive with Agaria leading them. Anyways, what’s done is done, no use dwelling on it now.”
“Speaking of Agaria, what should we tell her?” Solaris inquires curiously.
“Just tell her that Vinea has gone missing in the forest. After a few weeks of searching the clan will presume her dead.” Ryujin commands. With a satisfied nod, Solaris lies down on the floor next to her mate, the two dragons curling around each other and dozing off into a deep sleep.

______ Born in the Viridglade tribe of the Everbloom Gardens, Vinea is the younger of the chieftains 2 daughters, cast aside and forgotten in favor of her older, more talented sister Agaria. A very unsociable clan at heart, all dragons living in the tribe are constantly competing against each other to try and usurp the chieftains title, growing bolder over the past few weeks as they know the older, more talented of the two heirs will be given to the Gladekeeper, as custom dictates. Pressured with losing their superior heir, the two chieftains hire a mercenary from the Southern Icefields to drop off their younger daughter in the freezing snowfields of his homeland, never to return to the Viridian Labyrinth. Unknowing of her parents true motives, Vinea excitedly takes off after the mercenary, mind whirling with thoughts of adventure!

As months pass by and the two dragons trek through countless flight territories with no signs of stopping, Vinea begins to grow unsure of this whole mission, finding the whole thing quite suspicious. Why would her parents want to claim territory so far from their tribe? Her traveling companion was certainly no help in finding answers, ignoring every question she threw at him. It was a few weeks after they arrived in the tundra of the Southern Icefield that Vinea’s companion left her in the cold. Sheltering under a rocky outcropping from the harsh snowstorm outside, her silent companion went out to hunt for food, never to return. Dread settling in the pit of her stomach, the Coatl ventured out in the blinding snowstorm to search for him. 5 days passed as the young dragon scoured the snowy world, exhaustion plaguing every bone in her body and gnawing hunger eating away at her insides. It was on the 6th day that Vinea came to terms with the fact that she was abandoned, both by her parents and her traveling companion, and resigned herself to curling up on the cavern floor in tears. On the 7th day, a ray of hope. Numbly trudging forward on shaky legs through the snowfields, the young Coatl is approached by a silver furred Tundra dragon with glowing copper horns.
“Hello, my name is Hawkfrost. I’ve been patrolling this area the past couple of days and couldn’t help but notice the poor condition you were in, and as a Warden of the South it is my duty to aid any dragon in need. Would you like to tag along with me? You look famished, how about I catch you something to eat and you can rest up at my den?” The stranger now identified as Hawkfrost offers.
Ruby eyes narrowing in thought, Vinea carefully weighs her options in her head. “This new Tundra seems trustworthy enough, what with being a member of the Wardens and all. He’s a far cry better than Snowstreak at the very least. In any case, I don’t think I can survive here much longer all on my own.” Having reached her decision, Vinea turns to Hawkfrost and accepts his proposal with a nod.
“Sure, I could definitely use something to eat! The name’s Vinea by the way.”

Note: Ending of Vinea’s story is tied into Hawkfrost’s story.
