Starshine

In the beginning, all was dark. A shroud of impenetrable blackness, surrounding me, cradling me. Not unfriendly, but welcoming and supportive. More importantly, endless. How long I was there, I do not know, but it was home. It was safe, secure, it was good. And, for a time, it seemed enough.

The Change followed; a smattering of light, small pinpricks of brightness, poking their way through, illuminating the dark. First one, then another, and soon after that many, many more. Where first there was calm, it brought imbalance, uncertainty. Chaos. Around me there was panic, the natural response to change.
But, for all that it implied, I was curious. It seemed a wonder to me, with each and every small blip that appeared. How did it happen? From where did it come? What did it mean?

A voice, familiar yet distant, spoke to me. There are those who fear the dark, it advised sagely. You will go to them. Educate them. With time they will learn.

Youth combined with curiosity leads to speaking before thinking. Learn what?

Though I could not see from whence the voice came, I felt its tolerant smile. We all have a place in the world, little one, it said. A purpose. Working together, we bring harmony. Balance. There is no fear to be found in that. You must show them.

Show them? I echoed. A moment’s pause, careful consideration, I nodded. That I can do. But, how? Will they not need proof?

Barely had I breathed agreement to this mission when sudden brightness encased me, wrapping me in a bubble. I shielded my eyes on instinct, but only for a moment. Darkness returned, the light fading, but only in part. In its place, a map, the proof that I needed.

Without delay, I accepted the challenge. I arrived soon thereafter in a world far brighter than I ever dreamed. Here, the light was as endless as the dark had been for me. Here, strange looks are tossed my way, curious stares.

But I will not be deterred nor swayed from my mission. I carry my tale openly, plain for all to see. Proudly.

It is said, that many are afraid of the dark. Not me. I am Starshine, and from the darkness I was born.
