Biography

59KzWXX.gif Demir

There was something about molten metal that always spoke to the coatl. He had dabbled in shaping, reshaping and melding. He’d hammered out sheets of it, blades, helms and the like molded from the slam of a hammer and the fiery heat of his forge. Somehow, he had become well known for his practice. If only he were as superb as he was hailed to be.

Simply told, Demir was not a smart dragon. He was not a master nor well versed in magic to control lava. He was an avid fan of his craft, born in a fire clan and naturally drawn to the element. This admiration for the flame and what it could do to metal was what drew Demir to taking up an apprenticeship with his birth clan’s blacksmith, where he learned the skills he had so adored. Now, that is not to say his master would have seen Demir as a bad student. On the contrary, Demir learned fast. He would spend many hours well past his expected time in the forge continuing to work, the heat of the forge’s flames on his feathers and skin feeling more like home than any other part of the clan. His dedication is what made his master proud, not his craftsmanship. He made wonderfully crafted items of course, but to suggest they were worth being hung up in a king’s armory would have been a stretch. His master had seen the potential in Demir though, so upon his apprenticeship ending he suggested to his old student to try his hand at a competition. The hope was that it would inspire Demir to go further with his craft than what he had learned from his master. Demir, being the dragon that he was, decided to enter.

Demir had been lucky on the day of the competition all those years ago. Lucky he did not fuss over trivial things or get caught up in scandals that cost every other competitor their shot at making a name for themselves. No, that honor was bestowed upon Demir. Sure, he might not have been quite as talented as some of the others, but with his name out there after the competition he found himself sought after far more than he had anticipated. Dragons from across the world would come to the coatl, asking for his help or to purchase his skills. He of course did as requested, and with every finished piece more rumors were spread about the dragon that created an enigma about him. This newfound fame didn’t get to Demir’s head quite like one would expect. He didn’t find himself boasting his skills, simply taking the jobs that came to him without any desire to decline. Each job meant more time within the forge, hours whittling into early dawn as the molten metal continued to bubble before he hammered it out into superb shapes. These orders took Demir across the land of Sornieth, to forges both small and grandiose.

Though, with his fame came the troublesome fact that no matter where Demir went, dragons were bound to flock and find him. Even on a quick holiday the dragon was not safe from inquiries. Despite traveling to the Molten Scar where few are inclined to go, Demir was not given much time to relax.

“The great blacksmith vacations so close to the flow of lava!” a voice called out. Demir lifted one of his eyelids to seek the voice. By now he had grown accustomed to this interruption from all kinds that had traveled, and had also learned it did him no good to shoo them away. “We apologize for our intrusion, you of all dragons deserve some peace and quiet.”

Demir knew what was coming next. The dragon that approached came with two others behind her, clearly a small entourage. Whoever had sent the three were looking for something expensive, and wanted Demir to be the one to make it. He sat up from where he was reclining, yawning and turning his attention to all of them.

“Our master bids us to come to you post haste,” the dragon continued. “We are in immediate need of a coronation sword, as our master is finally being crowned.” her face lit up with pride, as if she had been the one to procure the position herself. Demir missed it of course. In fact he stared at them for a long hard moment, setting in to the three that perhaps this great blacksmith was not interested in helping them. In reality though, Demir was trying to envision what the difference between a regular sword and a coronation sword were.

“Since you’re disturbing my vacation,” he waved a claw finally at the rupture of earth and the molten lava flowing through it. “I do expect well compensation.”

“But of course!” she said quickly, her face alight once again now that she knew she had snagged up the blacksmith for her master. “Please, we will wait for you by the edge of the scar to gather yourself. Any sort of supplies you desire will also be procured. Although, our home’s forge is one of the greatest in the land.”

“I’ll need tin, some steel. Gold for the hilt, rubber-”

“Rubber?”

“Yes, rubber. Do you doubt me?” He raised a brow.

“No, no not at all! Ask and it shall be yours.” she nodded, snapping a claw as one of the others began to scrawl down his requests. He listed off a few more things, most drawing a strange face from the three but they did not interrupt any further. When he was finished he gazed out across the landscape once more.

“Do you know why I love lava so?” he asked the dragon. She looked at him, then at the flowing river of hot liquid earth and shook her head. “Because it reminds me of life: it flows until it grows cold and hardens.” She nodded momentarily.

“But does it not destroy everything in its path until then?” he shrugged, jumping off of the rock he had perched on. “Oh, no of course I understand! If we are to harden and die off near the beginning, we risk not leaving any trace of having been here.”

“Sure.” he didn’t mean that, but it was alright. The dragon beamed, thinking she’d just managed to see a bit of insight into the enigmatic blacksmith. Who was he to crush her spirit? How any dragon that had met Demir managed to maintain a vision of the dragon as anything but was beyond him, but he continued to say what was on his mind and none seemed to really question it. He’d done many things in the years since his call to fame, from blacksmithing for kings like his current employer (or at least soon to be king) to small trinkets for young hatchlings on their day of birth. He’d blinded others and given advice to more. Any dragon that looked in on Demir’s life would see a version of the coatl that was painted to be far more mystifying than the dragon truly was. The strangest part to Demir of course was he didn’t even have to try. He shrugged at the thought, then followed the trio. All in a day’s work.
