The Hound hatched from an egg in the possession of a trio of radicals, who aimed to unseat the gods themselves. They injected many eggs with a crazed cocktail of magical reductions, trying to create a warrior strong enough to battle a deity. Only a handful survived past hatching, their bodies twisted and malformed due to the excessive magical energies they were exposed to during incubation. Those that lived long enough to become independant ran away-except for one. Hound has no sense of self and lives only to obey orders given by whoever holds the amulet that matches his. Significantly larger than any normal skydancer, Hound rivals the size of a fully grown guardian. When commanded to attack, vicious tornados tear the world around him, with screaming gales strong enough to rip away a dragon's limb. Hound was taken to challenge the windsinger at the pillar of the world, but the deity never showed his face. Enraged, Hound was commanded to destroy the entire windswept plateau. Before too much havoc could be wreaked, the windsinger finally descended to take the amulet away from those who had created Hound. The god could not take the amulet with him, nor could he destroy it and risk setting the out of control creature on Sornieth. He conferred with his fellow deities to find an honorable dragon to care for the amulet, and for Hound, for despite his capabilities for destruction and barely there sentience, he is still a living dragon of flesh and blood. Starlight, the quiet guardian from the tangled woods, was chosen to be this caretaker. Hound was brought to Starlight when Burst and Darling were still children. At first, Starlight was furious at the deities for putting his new charge in danger, but as long as he holds the amulet, Hound is no danger. For a time, Starlight had to command Hound to even take care of himself, as when not given an order Hound would just sit silently. It took a year, but Starlight eventually was able to get Hound to feed and clean himself according to his needs without being ordered. However, even after so long, Hound still spends most of his time sitting quietly in Starlight's section of the lair, awaiting orders. When it is cold, Starlight wraps him up in cloaks and blankets to keep him warm. The guardian worries that the lack of stimulus might be grating or cause him depression, but he shows no outward signs of distress. Starlight sometimes wonders if he's fooling himself, but he refuses to give up trying to find some semblance of sentience in Hound. The broken creature is part of Starlight's charge, and is very important to him. Starlight wears the counterpart to Hound's amulet, and therefore he is Hound's everything. He does not see anything but him, unless Starlight tells him to. Starlight does not know that Hound will fight to the death to protect the holder. |
