Biography

Joined Clan after
Greenskeeper Gathering 2019.

Taking over as Costume Designer while Hellinore takes a sabbatical. Calianope suspects the sabbatical could be permanent, but she keeps such thoughts to herself.

The day Luxa came, Calianope mostly remembers the questions. "Where did it come from?" "Who sent it?" Her Circus pals were so nosy.

"It's from a vendor at the Thundercrack Carnivale, obviously," Calianope gently untangled the tendrils of the Jelly Drone as it floated out of its box.

"Calli's got an admirer from the Lightning Flight...!" sang Fallada, always on the lookout for romance.

"Just stop." Calianope found herself distracted by the colors in the drone as it found its way to the light streaming in from the window. The sunbeams sparkled off its surface like crystal, casting rainbows about the room. It was beautiful.

The Mirror pirate had been standing behind them for hours, leaning against the massive trunk of the oak. It was starting to make Sequoia nervous.
31716551.png “Enkidu, who is that?” She inquired of the little Snapper, who was counting the entry forms. He barely glanced over. “That’s Thorne.”

“Do you know why he’s been there all morning?"

Enkidu thought, then perked right up. “Maybe he’s spying!” Then he shook his head. “Naw, he’s probably just making sure that I behave…”

Thankfully, just then another dragon approached the table, their application in hand…

55522250.png It was late afternoon when Thorne finally approached the table. Sequoia was glad Enkidu was napping. He was an enthusiastic helper, but keeping him busy was exhausting.

“May I help you?” Sequoia was polite as ever. “Did you want to enter the contest?” She asked helpfully.
“Got one fer ye’,” Thorne began in a gruff voice. ‘What did th' Sky Pirate say t’ th' Gaoler?’”

“Excuse me, but that’s not a poem, that is a riddle!” Sequoia was surprised out of her manners. “Did you want to enter a poem or not?”

But Thorne just shrugged and sauntered away…

55522250.png Thorne was back. Sequoia was having a busy morning logging in new entries. Thank goodness Enkidu was there to help her sort the forms and keep the piles organized!

The mirror waited his turn silently. When he reached the front of the cue, he leaned on the desk, a small smile starting on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Sequoia faced him directly, all business.

“What is it, Thorne? As you can see, we’re rather busy…”
“So, a Mirror and a Skydancer walk into a bar…”he began, but Sequoia cut him off.

“That is a joke, Thorne, not a poem! Look,” She scanned the piles on the table and pulled a sheet off the nearest one. “Poems have rules. Here is a list. Please don’t waste my time unless you have an actual poem to share!” When the Mirror just blinked at the paper, she added, “If you’ll step aside, there’s a serious poet behind you waiting to submit their entry!”

“What are you writing, Enkidu?” Sequoia asked. The little Snapper held up his paper so she could read:
31716551.png
‘My mum traveled o’er the world,
Her banner of Love to unfurl,
When she met a guy,
She passed him on by,
And finally found Love with a girl!’

“Oh my! You’re a poet, too! Are you going to enter the contest?”

To Sequoia’s surprise, Enkidu answered, “Oh no! This is going in my journal. I’m starting a Poetry Journal, just like Thorne has!”
“Thorne keeps a Poetry Journal?!” She tried to keep the incredulity out of her voice.

“Oh yes! He keeps it under his bunk! An’ he lets me read it sometimes!”

They were interrupted at that moment by a dragon approaching the table...

55522250.png Once again Thorne stepped up to the Poetry Table beneath the oak. This time, he handed Sequoia a crumpled piece of paper. It looked like someone tried to smooth out a paper wad.

It read: “Roses be red,
Violets be blue,
I be a Pirate,
'ow 'bout you?”
Sequoia offered the Mirror a smile as she returned the paper. “Well, at least it rhymes. Good work.” Thorne continued to stand there, waiting. “Did you want to enter this in the contest?” Sequoia hazarded a guess. Thorne just shrugged, then pocketed the poem as he strolled away leaving the Skydancer puzzled as other entrants approached… 31716551.png

55522250.png “I’d like to be enterin' thee Haiku contes'.” Sequoia nearly dropped her quill when Thorne plunked a folded paper on the table before her. She took it gently and read the enclosed poem.

“This isn’t a haiku, really, but it is a rhyming couplet. It’s quite nice, really.” She read aloud:

“At Mistral Jamboree the food smells great!
My stomach is growling, I just can’t wait!”
It made her chuckle, but when she looked up, she saw Thorne making his way back to the pirate ship. Confused, she refolded the couplet and put it absently in her pocket as the next dragon stepped up to the table… 31716551.png

55522250.png “Well, I see Thorne is back,” Windruffles commented to her friend as they set out more entry forms. “What’s he doing now?”

Thorne was indeed back under the oak tree. This time he sat, leaning against the trunk, with a stack of books beside him. He ignored the Jamboree festivities around them, with eyes only for the page before him.

“Reading? I guess,” Sequoia shrugged. She found him confusing. Never had she met a dragon with so little art for conversation.

“I’m just glad Davnan thought to print up so many forms,” Windruffles stood and shook out her fur. “Well, I’m off! And here come some more entrants to keep you busy!” She waved as she trotted away toward the festival booths…

55522250.png When Thorne approached the table this time, he slid an envelope over to where Sequoia sat with Enkidu. He glared at the young Snapper who gazed back, completely unfazed.

“Oh, is this another poem?” Sequoia slipped it easily out of the envelope. “I wanted to discuss your couplet…”Her speech faded away as she read. Then there was a pause. A long pause.
“You never wanted to enter the poetry contest, did you?” She continued softly when she found her words. “First of all, this is a lovely poem. Second, yes, I would enjoy that very much.”

Sequoia turned to her assistant. “Enkidu, would you cover for me? Windruffles will be here soon. Please tell her I had to leave early.”

As the two older dragons wandered off into the crowd, Enkidu slid his chair over so he could read the paper left on the table.
31716551.png
“When gazing o’er the ship at the lovely Plateau view,
I can think of nothing sweeter than to stroll along with you.
I look at all the blossoms and think of my own home,
And I think there’s nothing sadder than to walk the fair alone.
I am just a lowly pirate, here today, tomorrow gone,
But would you do me the honor to take a turn about the lawn?”
