Verna remembers danger. Her precious little hunter was hurt by it. It had to be removed. It was too dangerous.

Verna remembers a small squiggle that was the light of her life. She called him Juicebox, little one, my child, and many more. He was a rambunctious little creature that made her smile. She remembers his little red face and the way he would dance around and adorn himself with flowers.

She remembers her neighbor who was a large and charming trickster. He gave her gifts and danced with her during festivities.

She remembers breathing in the air that was so incredibly pure. It was similar yet different. Pools of clear bluish puss were surrounded by green and rainbow. Sleeping creatures had meat on their skeletons and dragons gave newcomers gifts.

She remembers stalking through sharpness and running across dead land. It was hurt and betrayed. They thought of her as weak. They were circling. Why did it hurt so much? They weren’t like it after all.

It remembers splashing in greenish liquid with another. They were blue. It smelled like home and safety and pack and food.

It remembers running and never looking back. It had safety now. It was with creatures that protected it.

It remembers two large sparkly yellow creatures. It felt... scared? Angry? Hurt?



It woke up with heavy wounds. It could survive, though. After all that was what she always did... who was “she” again?

It slithered and explored and saw everything to see. It guided dragons to new places. It no longer had a need for memories of tiny creatures with flowers and smiles. It no longer had a need for worrying about danger. It no longer had a need for hurt or sharpness or meat or gifts or “pack.”

It was so much better than before.
