______ An inanimate statue of a Spiral dragon, it was warped into an unholy abomination as a result of being corrupted by the dark magic permeating the depths of the crypt it was housed in. This cursed crypt, a favored place for necromancers and other creatures who dabble in the dark arts, is said to be the resting place of an ancient evil that once plagued the land countless centuries ago. Although long since deceased, the black shadows that were once commanded by the creature still seemed to retain a will of their own, ever creeping and twisting along the darkened halls of the crypt. Acting upon the will of their deceased master, the black tendrils tirelessly sought out a compatible vessel to insert a fragment of their creator into, and it just so happened that the unassuming statue placed in front of a burial mound was the perfect match.
Digging their slimy tendrils into the cold stone, the black shadows work on transferring their power into the unfortunate object. The ornate marble carvings of the statue slowly soften into thick grey scales, the flesh forming within beginning to crack and bleed profusely as countless crimson eyes break through the surface of the newly forming skin. The blood red eyes, usually brimming with malice, seem to be shining with glee as they observe the flesh and scales obstructing their path being brutally torn apart as they push their way to the forefront of the poor creature’s body. This new life, now writhing around on the floor in agony at the unbearable pain coursing through it’s veins, is immediately assaulted by shadowy black tendrils binding him to the ground, a few of them venturing forward to caress his skull, whispering promises of death and destruction. Feeling a strange buzzing in his head, and seeing the multiple eyes lined across his spine beginning to grow increasingly active, the confused and terrified dragon knows that these strange tendrils are awakening something in him... something... wrong. Escape at the forefront of his mind, the panicking dragon aims a blast of blackened flames at the creeping tendrils, making them recoil in shock, and shakily makes his way on unsteady limbs to the entrance of the room. Growing accustomed to controlling his new body with each shaky step, the trembling dragon gradually quickens his pace until he’s standing before the main hallway of the catacombs. Chest heaving with exhaustion, all thoughts of rest are abruptly cut off when a massive tendril embeds itself into the wall a few inches from his face. Without even sparing a second glance, the monstrous dragon is halfway across the hall by the time the rest of the shadows creep around the corner. Attention focused solely on the light at the end of the tunnel, the grey dragon ignores the flashes of pain as razor sharp shadows tear gashes into his flesh. With one final burst of speed, he tears across the stone floor and launches himself through the entranceway, glancing behind him in astonishment as the shadowy tendrils that had burrowed into his skin were quickly being burned away by the sunlight. As the remainder of the shadows yet to touch the light begrudgingly recede back into the crypt, the young dragon refuses to drop his guard until the last slimy tentacle fades away into oblivion. Satisfied that the danger has passed after a few tense moments of waiting, he slumps to his paws in exhaustion and slowly drifts off into a restless slumber, too tired to even attempt to make sense of what just happened.

Awakened by the sound of birds chirping in the morning light, Dreadgaze blearily gets to his paws, gazing around with tired eyes at the unfamiliar surroundings in confusion, his blood red pupils slowly widening in recognition as memories of yesterday’s chaotic events flood his mind. Looking back at the mouth of the crypt in disgust, Dreadgaze instantly abandons the notion of entering that accursed place again, instead deciding to venture out into this new world in search of answers. Making his way through the verdant forest, the curious newborn is enthralled by the strange creatures this land holds, sparkling eyes tracing the movements of the fluttering avians above with glee. Briefly wondering if there are others like him in this land, his inner musings are cut short as a screech off alarm pierces the air. Yelping in fright, the scared Spiral snaps out of his thoughts to realize he’s standing right in front of a group of strange bipedal creatures, who, upon second glance, seem to share some relations with him, although the powerful raptor talons on their hind legs combined with the crest of feathers upon their heads gives away the fact that they are not of the same race. Trying to calm his breathing, the Spiral opens his mouth in an attempt to communicate with the strange creatures, only to gaze at them in confusion as they scream threats and curses at him, calling him a plague demon and an abomination while advancing towards him, teeth bared and hackles raised. Turning around and fleeing through the dense foliage, Dreadgaze quickly coils under a rotting log a fair distance away in hopes of shaking off his pursuers. After a few tense moments of waiting, he hears the raptors footfalls finally fade away into the distance, their prey abandoned. Breathing a sigh of relief, Dreadgaze slowly coils out of the log, still confused as to what provoked those creatures. Deciding to attribute their odd behavior to the influence of the darkness of the crypt, Dreadgaze decides to continue onwards in his quest, hopeful that the beings outside of this forest would prove to be a bit more hospitable.

~ ~ ~

Months had passed since Dreadgaze was given life by the strange shadows in the crypt, and as he ventured through the myriad of harsh lands the world had to offer, he was disheartened to see that all the strange reptilian creatures he encountered, who varied incredibly in all shapes and sizes, had reacted towards his presence with the same level of animosity as the very first ones he ever encountered. It was during his time in the territory called Dragonhome when he finally learned, after being nearly killed by earth dragons claiming him to be a spawn of the shade, that he was the cause of all their hatred. Hissing in fear at the great earthen Snappers standing above his broken and bloodied body, the grey scaled Spiral levels them one last pitiable stare filled with unshed tears before succumbing to his injuries and falling unconscious.
Dragging the mangled corpse carelessly between their jagged teeth, the pair of Snappers cross the border between their territory and the plague territory, continuing forward until they reach a great cliff. Below this cliff lies a blackened swamp through which everything unclean flows, having long since been overtaken by poison and plague; a final resting place for those cast away. Flinging the half-dead Spiral over the edge, the two Snappers retreat back to their territory without so much as a second glance, leaving the poor creature to whatever fate may await him below.

Edit: the end of Dreadgaze’s story is tied in with Astrea’s
