Smoke wound itself around Luminaria like a slithering snake, reaching and grasping for the hatchling with gleaming fangs.
“No! Let me go! Let me go!” she shrieked, her eyes widening with terror.
The ashes were coming for her, hissing in her ears. No, they weren’t hissing. They were growling, their claws closing around her throat, suffocating her. Luminaria gasped, opening her mouth to let out a soundless scream. A terrible gagging sensation overwhelmed her, stealing her voice. All she wanted was her mother.
“Mother,” she sobbed, flailing around in the shadows. “Please. Help me…”
“Luminaria? Is that you, my dear child?” Roveda called softly, lighting a lantern with an agile flick of her paws. “Why are you awake in the middle of the night? Did you have a nightmare again?”
The hatchling nodded, shuddering at the memory. She threw herself in the comfort of her mother’s embrace, listening to the reassuring beat of Roveda’s heart. Her mother stroked her feathers, humming a soothing lullaby until Luminaria calmed once more.
“There. There, little one. Everything is alright. Have courage. See, there is always light by your side. Light,” Roveda murmured, bringing the lantern before Luminaria’s eyes.
The hatchling peered at the soft, flickering glow, her racing heart slowing to the gentle rhythm of the twinkling flame. All the monsters in the dark were gone, fleeing at the brightness of her mother’s love. There was safety. There was love. There was light!

Mother had always been there by her side, holding Luminaria’s hand and sing a soothing lullaby. She had always been there with a smile, giving her children hope and light. She had always been there in the middle of the family, lighting the lanterns. Each one had been so full of hope and light, but not anymore.
Crouching by the darkened lanterns with name scribbled across each one, Roveda was weeping, clutching the lighter to her heart. She looked so tired, her eyes drooping from lack of sleep. There were shadows crowding its depths, and Luminaria could see that even in the dark. She never realized it, but Roveda must’ve been hiding her sadness all along as she cared for her family, putting aside her grief for those she had lost.
Now, Roveda needed her, and Luminaria knew she must help her mother. The young dragon stepped forward, surging across the river of blackness that coursed through the night. Smoke hissed, stirring awake to her presence. It slithered around her legs, making Luminaria freeze with terror.
What kind of daughter was she, letting her fears get in the way of her duty? Who was she staring vacantly at the dark, letting her mother cry? Why was she so weak? Why did she have to succumb to the shadows every single time? Luminaria didn’t know! She needed courage, but where could that be?
“Lanterns,” she whispered softly under her breath, her heart racing as she took another step forwards.
Inch by inch, she made her way forward, closing her eyes as she imagined that radiant glow. The ashes were chasing after her, trying to shackle her legs. They won’t! Determination blazed in Luminaria’s eyes as she opened them once more, dashing the rest of the way to her mother’s side. With an elegant flick of her paws, Luminaria lit the darkened lanterns, chanting the names of the fallen. She whisked them into the sky, letting them sail in the sea of stars.
“Have courage. There will always be light,” Luminaria muttered, knowing that will always be true.

Theme Song Movement 1 (Nightmares)- Ashes by The Bengsons Ashes

Look at my face
Please look at my, face
Ashes, I'm
Turning to
Ashes, I'm falling
I can't stop
I can't stop
I've been running
Since you broke me

Theme Song Movement 2 (Lantern Light)- Arsonist's Lullaby by Hoizer

When I was a child, I'd sit for hours
Staring into open flame
Something in it had a power
Could barely tear my eyes away

All you have is your fire
And the place you need to reach
Don't you ever tame your demons
But always keep 'em on a leash
