"It is said that long ago a young ebon-hide guardian set out on The Search at a much younger age than expected. On his tireless travels, he contracted an illness resulting in fever and, in his delirium, the youngster found himself lost in the Southern Icefield amidst a raging blizzard. It wasn't long before the nature dragon succumbed to the frigid temperatures, but then something peculiar is said to have happened. It is believed the Icewarden took pity on the unfortunate guardian. The dragon's form was lifted from the snow by the winds and engulfed by the blizzard. It was then a blinding light could be seen for miles even in the limited visibility of the storm and as suddenly as the light appeared... it was gone and all was quiet. The storm dissipated, if only temporarily, and in the guardian's place laid the great form of an ancient gaoler with fur as dark as the youngster's hide."

A nature guardian-turned-gaoler by mysterious means, Brutus was found near the Fortress of Ends by other gaolers who then brought him into the catacombs under the assumption he was simply done in by a Shade-touched. They were bewildered to find out he was originally blessed by the Gladekeeper rather than the Icewarden as they were; however, the means by which he became a gaoler granted him increased resistance to ice magic - it also seemingly wiped his memory clean - but the assistance of a nature dragon in the prisons soon proved to be invaluable and he was quickly appointed to the Keeper Order. When the time came for the Seekers to return, Brutus ventured out with them to put his skills to greater use and to hopefully learn where he came from.
