Hardly anything surprised Zahkrii these days. The years she spent wandering around the world and fighting by Visenya's side opened her eyes in a way she never believed was possible. Part of her missed those days, but she enjoyed life with Azantyr nevertheless.
Vis occasionally flew away from their home in a hurry, often signaling other members of the clan to follow her. Healers, mostly. Being the skilled fighter she was, the last thing she needed was a fighter, trough she occasionally asked the predator to follow. Not as a warrior, but as a friend. Yet most of the time she left alone. And always returned with at least one new member to the clan. Ever since she had hatchlings even her mate stayed back home.
Zahkrii did not surprise either when she saw her leader's silhouette rushing away in the night. She left alone. Vis did not ask anyone to follow. She did not ask Zahkrii, yet... so much time passed since their last adventure. Sweet memories ran trough her mind. And suddenly it was a call. A call to make new memories. The mirror could not fight the urge to follow her. She launched herself off to the air and flew after her leader as rapidly as her wings bared.
"Vis!" she shouted. In return Vis stopped flapping for a second, giving her enough time to catch up.
"It is not like the usual vibration. I do not know what is going on now, friend," said Vis. That was the first surprise of the adventure. Zahkrii believed that the vibrations Vis felt came from the Plaguemother herself. Moreover Vis always knew what to do, who to find and what to tell them.
"Don't we need healers, then?"
"I think not, but I feel that time is running short, and there is a long way to go."
"Where to?"
"Wispwillow Grove," from their home in the Boneyard the grove was one of the closest locations, yet it was a big world. "We can't stop to rest. You must be tired, if you wish to rest return home now."
"We've been trough worse together, didn't we?" smiled the mirror.
"Together we shall overcome anything," agreed Vis, "I'm glad to have you around."
"Well, sure I missed a good adventure with you, friend."

The wind was kind and their wings were strong, thanks to that it hardly took them a day to reach the grove.
"It seems I'm out of shape, Vis," laughed Zahkrii as she fought to keep her eyes open once they landed.
"We both are I'm afraid. Even the raids became rare nowadays," with that she closed her eyes and grabbed into her pearl. The mirror never understood the deal with pearlcatchers and their pearls, but Vis felt the vibrations only when she had her pearl around.
They both have been in Wispwillow Grove before, but that was many years ago, and they spend here only a short period of time. Besides to Zahkrii each glowing fungi looked alike. They were nothing like the individual pieces of carcass and bones of the boneyard. Even so the fungi might have looked beautiful if not for that impenetrable mist that seemed to be everywhere in the Tangled Wood. The darkness... the tiredness... she yawned, then glanced at Vis half-expecting her to fall asleep while meditating.
"We're close," that was Vis, clearly awake, but the tiredness was visible in her deep red eyes, "I can't tell the direction, though."
"We can split up to cov..." a nocturne's roar from above interrupted her.
"The vibration's not above us, that I can tell. Watch out, a dragon can easily melt into the darkness around."
"If I remember I was the one who taught you that in the first place," pointed out the mirror.
"Just to make sure your memory still works, Zahkrii," laughed Vis.
"That might not, but I see the heat, you know. So shall we split up?"
"Would you find your way back to this point?"
"No," she replied after a moment of silence. "Wish we were in the boneyard."
"You're not the only one... but someone needs us here. We must answer the call."
"To east?" suggested the mirror a direction. The pearlcatcher nodded and they both turned eastward. Vis didn't let go of her pearl for even a second. She wasn't like the others of her breed, though. Aside from the vibrations she hardly ever looked at that thing, while most pearlcatchers she knew hardly ever let go of their pearls.
They moved from fungi to fungi, as through the mist that was the only light source. It was night anyway, or so she thought.
"It's getting stronger," whispered Vis after a few minutes. As an answer they heard a cry. The thick mist distorted the voice so badly that there was no way of telling it's direction or origins.
"Heat," whispered Zahkrii, for her smaller pair of eyes saw that much. It was dim and a less experience hunter might have just missed it. But not the predator herself.
She lead the pearlcatcher closer to the source and as they closed up their casual walking turned into sneaking. Then the cry sounded again. And a hiss. From this close she realized what it was. A mirror. A baby mirror. And a cobra.
With that she began running, and so did Vis.
The cobra died soon by her blade and just before he reached the hatchling. Then came the second surprise of the adventure. It wasn't the three rotten eggs or the crying mirror baby that surprised her, though. It was the mirror's eyes. Or tears, mayhaps.

"Please forgive me. I am so sorry daughter. It is all my fault," was the first words the little mirror heard. Or at least the first ones she could recall. Back then she did not understood their meaning, but, somehow, remembered. Her mother's words, she assumed. Her mother's first and last words to her. And her only memory of the one who laid her.
Then she was alone. She could not see and did not learn yet to use her other senses, but knew that she was alone. And cold. And hungry. She began crying. Being recently born she had no knowledge of the world, her cries might have been just a waste of precious energy, or a way to lure predators that would see an easy pray in the hatchling. And in a day it became both. A day of crying weakened her even further, and she failed to realize that a cobra almost ended her life.
Then she heard a hush and speaking. She understood none of the words, but they calmed her.
"Have you ever seen anything like her?" spoke a voice.
"No." said another.
"She is cold," she then felt something warm roll around her. A body, she understood. She began understanding smells, the body smelled comforting. "She must be starving, I'll prepare the cobra for her, while you warm her up."
Soon she heard something sharp then cracking. And felt even more warmth. So hot that she feared that if she moved closer to the source it would hurt her. Then she heard hissing. And smelled something that made her stomach produce a deep sound. A desire. Food. Soon the hissing stopped and then she heard little thumps.
Then something was in front of her mouth.
"Eat little girl," she heard a kind voice. It came not from the one around her body. She smelled the object in front of her and consumed the piece. Then another. Then another. And even more. When the pieces stopped coming she cried, even if she was full. But she liked the taste.
"Rest now, sweetie. A long journey awaits us," said the body around hers in a comforting voice. True enough she had no idea what was the meaning of the sound, but she obeyed nevertheless. Only because she was tired and felt safe at last.
