______ Shouldering his way through the mounds of powdery white snow, Hawkfrost narrows his eyes against the biting winds lashing against his pelt. With his vision almost completely obstructed by the raging snowstorm, Hawkfrost relies on his ears instead, swiveling them about to try and pinpoint any nearby signs of life. Ears twitching as he catches the barely perceivable sounds of a Coatl’s heart beating weakly from deep under the snow, the male Tundra immediately sets to work digging. Using his massive paws to scoop the soft snow aside effortlessly, it only takes the Tundra a few minutes of digging before an unconscious female Coatl is unearthed; frozen wings locked up and frostbitten limbs turning blue. Carefully draping the sickly Coatl on his back, Hawkfrost slowly gets to his paws and takes off across the frozen snowfields, racing back to his lair to treat the young dragon.

______ Making his home in the peaks of the Cloudscrape Crags, Hawkfrost is one of the famed Wardens of the South, an order of Tundra Dragons famous for their unwavering bravery in delving into even the most brutal of snowstorms to rescue stranded dragons. Nicknamed the ‘Warden of the Frosted Peaks’ due to the area he patrols in, Hawkfrost is usually seen guiding traveling dragons through the perilous mountain pass he calls his home or patrolling his territory looking for signs of injured dragons. During his most recent expedition the male Tundra came across a starving Coatl named Vinea all alone in the snowfields. Offering to give the young dragon a place to stay until she recovers her strength, the two quickly become fast friends as they get to know each other. One day while Hawkfrost was out on the mountainside teaching Vinea how to hunt in the snow, a particularly nasty gust of wind kicks up, knocking the young Coatl off the ledge and sending her plummeting into the snowfields below. Not wasting a moment Hawkfrost leaps off the ledge in pursuit of the downed dragon, wings folding together in an effort to quicken his decent. Years of exposure to the harsh climate of the Southern Icefield allows Hawkfrost to smoothly plunge down after the falling dragon, unhindered by the frenzied winds tearing against him.

Many days have gone by since Vinea was rescued, and the young Coatl currently lies sleeping on the floor of the Tundra’s den, wrapped up in a bundle of fur blankets. A couple feet away from the slumbering dragon is Hawkfrost, pacing across the floor of his den deep in thought. Already having successfully treated the Coatl for her hypothermia and curing her of frostbite, the Tundra wonders why she has yet to wake up. In the past 3 days he’s tried all manner of herbs and called in the best healers this frozen snowfield has to offer, but ultimately all proved unsuccessful in their efforts. Coming to a decision, Hawkfrost decides to take Vinea to a clan in The Scarred Wasteland rumored to be home to Cloudfeather, a wandering healer famous for her ability to treat even the rarest of afflictions.

It took 4 weeks for Hawkfrost to arrive at the gorge in The Wandering Contagion, quickly being ushered into the healers den once the shocking condition of the unconscious Coatl was brought to light. Entrusting the life of the sickly dragon to Cloudfeather, Hawkfrost busies himself by helping out around the clan. As he spends the early mornings racing through the gorge alongside Thistleclaw and Rowanclaw in search of prey, chatting with Jaysong about her latest inventions, helping Mapleshade collect herbs for Cloudfeather, and sitting down with Lavahaze to discuss border patrols, Hawkfrost finds himself becoming quite attached to the dragons of the clan..
It was during his 2nd week living in the clan when Cloudfeather approached him, telling him that Vinea had finally awoken and was asking to see him. Thanking the healer for helping his friend, Hawkfrost turns around and races off towards the direction of the den. Pacing through the entrance, the Tundra dragon widens his eyes in surprise as a young Coatl tackles him to the ground, affectionately rubbing her muzzle into his fur. After being scolded by Cloudfeather to lay back down, Vinea explains how she heard about everything he went through just to help her and warmly thanks him, saying she owes him her life. As days pass and the 2 dragons spend time sharing stories, Cloudfeather reluctantly permits Vinea to leave the healers den, warning her not to overexert herself. Walking out of the den for the first time Vinea suddenly stops short, in awe of how massive the gorge is and how closely knit the dragons here are, almost as if they were one big family (a stark contrast to her original clan)! As time goes by and Vinea grows accustomed to her new life in the clan, already making friends with some of the dragons and having the time of her life hunting alongside them as a team, she comes to the realization that she wouldn’t mind spending the rest of her life here. Wanting to remain in the clan but also not wanting to leave Hawkfrost behind, Vinea asks the Tundra what he plans to do now that she’s no longer sick. Having grown quite fond of this place and the dragons that dwell within (especially a certain little Coatl), Hawkfrost tells Vinea that he would be happy to remain here by her side.

Although now a member of the clan of dragons living in The Rotten Gorge, Hawkfrost cannot resist the yearning he feels to return to his icy homeland. In the winter when his fur coat grows thickest the Tundra returns to the mountain peaks he once called home, resuming his role as the Warden of the Frosted Peaks once more. Here he stays helping dragons in need until the first warm day of spring, and as the first of the tundra flowers break through the frost covered earth, the young dragon is already on his way home to reunite with the one he loves.
