Moving to Den City brought the chance for Mako to join the world of Link VRAINS - A virtual reality world created and maintained by tech giant SOL Technologies to bring people together and more often than not, centered on the card game of Duel Monsters. And with the knowledge that, despite carrying a duel disk of his own, her closest friend in Takeru didn't duel, Mako signed up for the game and created a player account in secret, keeping her choice even from him.
With said account came the creation of Alanna, Mako's avatar, and a newfound freedom she couldn't get offline. Inside Link VRAINS and armed with her Lightsworn deck, she was free to be everything she couldn't be offline - Impulsive, brave, outspoken.... With nobody knowing who she really was and no way to track her down in the real world (as far as she knew), Alanna became a release. Nobody expected the proper, gentle-spoken wallflower - If she was excited, irritated, anything, she could show it and never have to worry.
Soon enough, the virtual world saw fit to allow her to meet Soulburner, a fiery and bright boy with a smile that seemed to make the entire server brighter. Friendship bloomed between them faster than she could have imagined, and she soon took to messaging him whenever she had time to log in, just to see if he was available to hang out. Any time he was, it wasn't uncommon to find Alanna rushing to meet him, either sticking by his side or challenging him for a duel, or even less frequently attempting to help her conquer her fear of flying and actually use her account-bound D-Board.
As their friendship grew, Alanna steadily became more and more aware of Soulburner's involvement with Link VRAINS' hero, Playmaker, though true to her offline self, refused to ask. Whatever he was tangled up in was none of her business - Though it did quickly cement Soulburner as her ultimate goal. No matter how close their relationship or how dearly she cared for him, his skill with his Salamangreat deck also solidified him as her dueling hero... And her ultimate goal. If she could beat him, she decided, she could beat anyone, though even through four variations of her deck, that goal was far easier said than done.
Victory would come all of once before Mako's offline fight with Takeru, the subsequent changes in her life resulting in changes in Alanna, as well. With an all new avatar, she decided to tell Soulburner about what had gone down offline and walked away with the discovery that not only was he proud of her, but that he was also her best friend and new boyfriend - a revelation that, in the end, only made her laugh. Soulburner had always been someone she was inexplicably drawn to, and now it made sense why!
With their true identities revealed and their bond all the tighter for it, Alanna and Soulburner's relationship slipped into not only that of lovers, but also partners in their battle for a brighter future. While she's still largely unaware of what he went through as a child, she's become both a grounding force, support, and a shield for him, willingly stepping in the way of trouble, be it his temper or their fight, to protect him.
Armed with a new fire-themed stall deck to reflect her new outlook and a pair of Cyberse-type lions, Alanna's vowed to stand beside Soulburner and defend him to her last breath. There's nothing that'll ever be able to hurt him again... She'll make absolutely sure of that.
