In pursuit of perfection, there are those who would forsake everything.

To the ones who bred this dragon, even the sanctity of their own souls was a small price to pay. After all, what they desire is beauty above all else, and surely this is a selfless goal. For countless years, they have sought a child of pure white scales, with runes of servitude in the deepest ruby red. He must be delicate, as fine as Chantilly lace, with nary a mark to mar him. This, they believe, is the ideal.

At last, they have found him, their pretty porcelain doll…

...but there will always be rejects.

This dragon knew only their siblings, as their parents were taken from them at their birth. There were five of them at first, but the oldest of their clutch, a male with many eyes, was favored by their caretakers, and so their numbers fell to four. “He’s not like you,” their caretakers said, “he’s perfect.”

However, it is imperfection that saved them from a miserable life of servitude. Because they were “ugly,” their caretakers sold they and their siblings as apprentices to clans in need of young minds to mold. They will grow as other children do, learn a trade of their own choosing, and live freely for the rest of their days. For them, the circumstances of their birth will become naught more than a painful memory, to fade with time.

Perhaps, now and again, they will feel as though they are not worthy, that truly they are ugly—but these thoughts will be fleeting, because they are loved.
