Biography

20181024_graphic1_by_death_in_the_orchard-dcqadff.png

Twisting somewhere through the cosmos, there is a strand of copper. Space junk? It’s awfully pretty for junk.

The teeny spiral opened her eyes and realized she was no longer in the safety of her egg. She wasn’t in her nest at all. She was no longer on a -planet-. She was drifting through space, cradled in a delicate bubble that gently danced through the solar wind and magnetic fields, going nowhere in particular.

“Wh.. where am I?!” She spoke to nobody - and nobody answered. She was all alone. The dragon began to panic, her serpentine body writhing in terror as she spun around this way and that, in the process completely losing any sense of orientation she had. The orb around her wobbled uncomfortably in response. “I don’t want to be here!! I want to go home!” She threw herself at the walls of her prison, which continued to warp, and eventually it went with a POP, the tiny copper kid erupting out, like a stray ribbon from someone’s New Years Eve party confetti... and then it was even more lonely. No more protective embrace. She could feel the coldness of space, but she didn’t suffer at all. She just drifted.

It was several days before anyone picked up on the tiny dragon. Looking through a battered old telescope in the wee hours of a cold morning, a mature and statuesque ridgeback by the name of Barracuda saw, quite faintly, a coil of what looked like some kind of spring or wire. Blocking HIS view of the moon. How rude of that coil, to stick it to an old man! The barnacle-encrusted dragon huffed and spun the telescope back towards himself, and brushed off the lens. Probably just a ragamouse hair or bit of someone’s feather that got stuck to it, he figured. He looked back at the moon, and still saw the coil.

The older fellow looked around, until his small eyes fell on a spiral a few lengths away. Barracuda gruffly barked at the only other dragon on the beach at this ungodly hour.
“Hey, you!!”
The goggle-clad noodle blinked, and turned his head to stare at his elder with a bit of a grumpy look in his eyes, replying simply,
“Hm?”

Ugh, of course it was Bluedream. The lazy weirdo that laid on his back in some goofy jester’s outfit and stared at the sky all night, never saying anything.
“You. Weird kid. Come here.” Bluedream’s ears perked up and he glanced at Barracuda, but he quickly returned his gaze to the sky.
“I’m busy,” he muttered.

The ridgeback scoffed at the swirly-gened spiral.
“With what? I need you to look at something,” Barracuda rumbled back to him.
“I -am- looking at something.”
“The moon?”
“No. It’s some twisty thing in front of it...”
“I was hoping you wou—“ Barracuda was cut short by Bluedream.
“I’m gonna go get it. I want it for my collection.”

Bluedream pulled on his flying gear. He inherited it from his mother, and it was very dear to him, so he only wore it when he was going on a mission. Cap, check. Goggles, check. Not that he ever took those off. A thick jacket, check. The jester’s outfit would have to go for now... Satchel with rations; plants containing extra vitamins to prepare his body for those precious few moments when he’d breach the grasp of the planet like deep sea diving in reverse... This would be quite a trip, but he was used to them at this point. He often flew high up into and eventually out of the atmosphere, if only briefly, to collect bits and bobs from space for his collection. He was a bit of an oddball, but everyone has their hobbies. His mother would have been proud that he carried on her tradition of flying so high. He looked out from the beach cave he was preparing himself within, up at the stars. He couldn’t see the copper coil, but he knew it was out there, and soon enough, it would be his.

It was so cold. The swirly azure spiral was almost there. Just a little farther, and it was in his sights. He had his mom’s old navigational compass set on the coil from the moment it became visible. Not only was it the most beautiful metallic hue he had ever seen, but it seemed almost pearlescent. He had to find out what it was. He needed it for his collection, to fawn over, to catalogue, to display. Something on one end of the coil suddenly flickered with a cyan light, and Bluedream pumped his wings as hard as he could, motivated by a lust for shinies that rivaled the most indiscriminate corvid. It was glimmering, and pearly, and so beautiful. He was almost there. It was copper toned, with twinkling lights on it. Nothing in the world was as beautiful to him as this bit of junk. He thought internally about what it could be in the moments leading up to his “dive”. A spring...? A twist of tinsel...? “This one’s for you, mother.”

He burst forth from the cloudscape, sky-spelunking for this hypnotic bit of ore. He only had moments to swirl out, grab it, and then glide for days on the way down so he didn’t perish by burning out...

“Gotcha!” He laughed happily, clutching the spring against his chest like a Pearlcatcher with their treasure. This was HIS treasure now. His wings spread, he began his gentle descent, holding the most beautiful, scaly, opalescent, twisty... cyan eyed... HATCHLING?!!
