Turn The Lights Off by Tally Hall
Bend the nightmare
You control it
With a sharp *creeeeeak* of nails releasing, the lid of the crate was pulled off. The tiny creature within was nestled in a bed of straw, curled up and looking for all intents and purposes to be asleep.
A pair of faces looked in on the creature, one with an inquisitive, guarded glance, and the other with a triumphant smile.
"The gentleman I obtained it from said it is called a 'hijacker'. It can be used to tap into a worldwide telepathic frequency, and attract dragon-like creatures called drones. Quite useful for finding.... volunteers for the coliseum."
The triumphant smile became a gentle, pleased expression. It would almost be mistaken for a look of a proud parent, if it weren't directed at this.... monster. The second dragon's guarded expression tightened. "Just wha' am I ta' do wit' it?"
"Oh, nothing out of the ordinary- program, observe, control, and log results. You will be vigilant in monitoring this new experiment." The second dragon scanned the lab around him, taking in the various alchemical instruments, half-finished notes, and grim evidence of other 'scientific quests' that were obviously of a more unsavory nature. He gave a small sigh, finally looking at the first dragon once more.
"An' wha' if it twould go poorly?"
"I went to quite a bit of trouble and expense to find one, so do be careful with it." The words were mundane enough, but the icy tone layered beneath them made the scientist quiver. This was serious.
"Ya don' 'ave ta' tell me twice. Ya' got it, boss."
"Excellent. I do look forward to seeing your results." With an elegant turn, the 'boss' left the room, leaving the guarded scientist alone in the lab with the crate, the creature, and his thoughts.
Once he heard the heavy door at the end of the hall pull shut, he finally allowed himself to relax slightly. He turned to the crate once more, looking at the creature again. So small. So fragile.
So much like a newborn spiral hatchling. "I'm terribly sorry, littul one. Tis' not yar fault, bein' born this way...." He gently pulled the creature from the crate, and set to work.
