Biography

ASTER

The Brawler

As a hatchling, Aster had liked to stalk the other dragons in his lair. He’d hide among the outcroppings of Dragonhome, pretending to be a big cat, and pounce on his prey when they walked by. The other hatchlings in the lair were happy to tussle with him, often giving as good as they got, but the adults weren’t so happy when he leapt on them.

“You need to put all that energy to good use,” his mother said on the day she took him out to fish with her.

Aster stayed close to the nets and made sure none of their precious fish got out, but he was itching to explore and to take a more active role in gathering. Just holding a net was boring. When they got back to the lair, he helped clean the fish and took his share for his dinner, but he couldn’t help but think about what it would be like to actually go out and be an active part of the hunt.

When he said he wanted to train for the Coliseum, his father nodded, as though this was no great surprise.

“Alright, tomorrow we can head to the Training Grounds and you can practice throwing some spells,” his father said. But Aster frowned and stomped his foot, his tail swishing in agitation.

“I don’t want to be a spellslinger like you and Mother,” Aster countered. “I want to be a hunter, a brawler.”

His father looked Aster up and down and sighed.

“We’re not really meant to swipe at our opponents in close contact,” his father began, only to be cut off by Aster.

“I’ve always wanted to be in the thick of things,” Aster said, puffing out his chest. “I don’t like to sit back and strike from a distance. I either fight with my claws or not at all.”

“Let him fight,” his mother said. “It’s not the usual path, but it’s not unheard of.”

His father took Aster under his wing.

“Fine then,” he said. “If you want to brawl, then you can learn to brawl."

And so Aster made his way to the Coliseum, for the honor and glory of his clan.
