When Tiresias looked up from the tide-pools, he was alone.

It didn’t take long for him to realize that he’d wandered off from the family group; there was nobody in sight when he got bored of watching the endless, spiralling whorls of water.

His heart began to beat quicker, but he forced himself to take a deep breath and sent a quick prayer to the Tidelord. Casting all his eyes over the coast yielded nothing. He was alone except for the lapping of the waves and the calls of the gulls overhead. Tiresias burrowed into the sand, closing his eyes and feeling some of the panic recede from his body as the warmth of the sand wrapped around him.

He was wrong; he wasn’t alone after all. The Tidelord was there alongside him, in the water, in the air, in the sand, promising that he would be alright. That would have to be enough for Tiresias.

He didn’t know how long he had been there when a far-off shout called his attention. In the distance, Tiresias watched as a patrol of dragons came closer. Distantly, he wondered if he was dreaming. Were these dragons here to help, or were they here to hurt him? Were these the dragons the Tidelord had sent to save him?

He started mumbling prayers to Him, reliving all his previous memories, when the leader of the patrol - a red-and-blue mirror only a little bigger than himself - cautiously appraised him.

“Who are you?” the female mirror questioned. She inhaled, gaze softening. “A waterling.”

Tiresias could smell the smoke clinging to her scales. She’s a fire dragon. Unbidden, images of molten lava and smoke filled his mind. Is this who the Tidelord is working through? They’re fire dragons, though...

“What’s wrong with him?” Another dragon stepped forward, eyes glimmering with both curiosity and wariness.

Tiresias tried to get the words out of his mouth: that he was seeing true fire but all that emerged was hasty murmuring.

The images ceased as soon as they had began, and he blinked rapidly.

“I’m sure nothing’s wrong with him,” said the female mirror practically. Then she looked at him again. “Hello, little waterling. My name is Cinus.”

Somehow, the little hatchling found the courage to draw himself up, like a real dragon, letting all his eyes blink open and say, “Nice to meet you, Cinus.” The words were strange and thick on his tongue, but he spoke the rest as slowly and clearly as he could. “My name is Tiresias, and I think . . . I think I need help.”
