A rambling rage rang through the lair.
Heka lifted his head as the yells of anger vibrated throughout his workshop. He was trying to perform surgery on a familiar which had been infected by the shade physically. As soon as the roars started he knew he had to pause the operation.
He gave the familiar a tea brew of valerian root and poppy seeds, to put them to sleep. Heaving a sigh, he turned and tried to keep calm as he watched his carefully stacked vials tremble.
He dashed through the doorway and ran, knowing what the source of the problem was, the fact he saw a few common scorpion breeds scuttling through the halls didn’t help.
Finally, he paused at a doorway, looking down at the chaos that was ensuing. The first most obvious thing was that her scorpions escaped. Emperor scorpions battled Fat tailed scorpions in the mad chaos that made up the floor. Heka shakingly stalked forward into the chaotic room. It was a miracle he wasn’t stung or even stepped in one of the many shattered venom vials, however, the receiver of her wrath wasn’t as lucky.
Eris was covered in stings, bites, goop and other features that Heka wished never existed in the realm of injuries. She had flared out her wings and was spitting at Heka’s enraged mate – Hedetet.
Only a few cursed times had he seen her in this form. Her face had formed mandibles and faceted eyes like that of an arachnid, out of her furry tail sprung a pricked stinger, dripping with acidic venom.
Heka ran out in front of the furious goddess, using all his magical power to combat her stinging magical force. A sweep of softness flowed through the room. The scorpions were still under both goddess’ magic but started to part from both. Scurrying away into the gloom whilst the vials shifted themselves upright. Liquids that had spilt onto the ground soaked into the floor. Even the chaotic goddess began to calm, her magical aura of disorder wavering. However, Hedetet was still filled with a strong will of fury.
Heka began to speak. Pouring deep emotion into his words.
“Hedetet, my love, you must calm down. Your people will listen to your every hiss, but do not want to fight. Do not want to be left in this state. Foolish, foolish Eris shall be punished accordingly. Though my love, you must put your wrath away and focus on fixing what has been broken. And break through the effects of your own venom.”
Of course, Hedetet spat back words of curse, words of anger and other unsayable things. To the mortal eye, it seemed like just a normal couple’s argument. But beneath the words magic battled and wrang through the air. It was a very equal fight, but as it has always been, Heka’s powerful healing magic overpowered the biting, lashing force of hatred.
Hedetet’s scorpions scuttled back to their homes, and self-conciously she used her magic to clean up the room. The only thing left shattered as Eris’ trembeling form.
The lovers turned to eachother, having a telepathic moment.
“We shall heal her, together.” Spoke Heka, leaning down and rubbing his soft touch over an area of her leg that had been hit by shrapnel whilst Hedetet extracted various stings from the body of Eris.
And they worked in perfect harmony.

Though he heard Hedetet loudly shuffling off to their den to sleep, Heka kept working. There was a sick hatchling, after all. If he didn’t finish the medicine now, he would never fall asleep. “One crushed baku tusk, a powdered ribcage, an infusion of frostbite beetle blood…” He rattled off the ingredients aloud. He told the other clan members he did it to keep himself focused. That was a lie. In truth, he wanted any dragons passing by his workplace to hear how hard he was working, how utterly devoted to his work he was. Heka didn’t need much to get by; a kind smile, a nod, a single word of praise could last him a long while. Still, a little recognition was always appreciated.

“A wasteland pauper butterfly, some spiral aloe…” This habit of his, he’d decided, was one of the last remnants of his old self. The version of Heka that had the admiration of thousands of followers and was still dissatisfied. The Heka that had alienated so many true friends with his insecurity and his arrogance.
Heka sighed.
“Heka? What are you doing up so late? Are you alright?”
Peering into the entrance to Heka’s work room was Heh. Even in the darkness, his bright green scales were instantly recognizable.
“I don’t often see you around my workshop, Heh.” Heka said, smiling.
Heh took that as an invitation to walk in, looking around at all the exotic ingredients and odd little tools that Heka kept on his sizable shelves.
“There’s a lot to be done tomorrow. I thought I’d take a walk before bed, clear my mind.” Heh said mildly. “And you? I never took you for a night owl.”
Heka nodded towards his work. “Medicine, for a sick hatchling.”
Heh glanced at the assortment of ingredients that the healer had assembled. “What complexity! You must tell me about it!” He exclaimed.

And so, while Heka mixed together the ingredients, he also explained how each worked together, adding in a few tidbits of history, a few light-hearted quips here and there. Heh asked all the right questions, never truly distracting Heka, but always leaving the healer something to think about.
When the medicine was finished, Heka poured some into a tiny glass bottle. He stored the rest in a jar, in case the illness returned one day. Heka and Heh walked together towards the hatchling’s den.
“Now and again I visit your archives. I’m always amazed at how you can keep such a collection in order.” Heka said. “I don’t believe there’s anyone else in the clan that could do your work.”
He watched as Heh’s face lit up for a moment, enjoying the power of his words. Knowing from experience how much a compliment meant, Heka could never resist an opportunity to improve someone else’s mood, even if the joy only lasted as long as it took for pride to replace itself with a reflexive humbleness.
“Oh no, I’m only a simple clerk. You’re too kind.” Heh said, beaming. Seeing Heh’s face, Heka wondered if that sight was better than receiving a compliment himself.

As they turned a corner, Heh recognized the path back to his own room and wished Heka a good night. Now alone with his thoughts again, Heka realized that his enjoyment of Heh’s company had slowed his pace considerably. Feeling guilty, he moved much faster from then on. Soon enough, he reached the little crevice where most of the clan’s hatchlings slept.
They were huddled together to keep warm, and all were asleep and snoring save for one small wildclaw, who tossed and turned. She took a ragged breath and coughed weakly. Heka had ruled that the disease wasn’t contagious, but even allowed the warmth of the others, the hatchling was kept from sleep.
As Heka moved closer, she sat up and looked at him with her wide, purple eyes. “Here.” He whispered, smiling gently. “This will make you feel better.” She took the bottle from his paws and drank, and after a quiet moment Heka began to leave, knowing the effect wouldn’t be immediate.

But as he left the hatchling room, he thought he heard another snoring voice join the chorus.
