Symphoricarpos the forest incarnate

there was cold wind on the night, sky blacker than ink. red splashed against the soft white of snow
blushed against the tiny flakes as they melted away.
the moon was nowhere to be found.

there was no sound but the jingling of empty bells.
the world around is mute.
the wind is dull and cold.
no one wants to be out here.

no one but this little wildclaw
(well, he’s not really a wildclaw).
he travels the lonesome snowy pathways
with trees and fruit to see all around

they gleam in the absent moonlight
like forbidden lights
guiding the way of this soul
and many more to come.

eluding existence by dark inky night
they glower as his white eyes
scan the inky blackness
for a single object of choice

these little red orbs barely cling to visibility
through the murky snowy night
and fall into dark, starlit claws
as the night proclaims its immortality

they are of great interest in this winter forest
for they feed everyone and even he, the forest itself
they defy nighttime existence yet are still found here
tiny items of food and soul
