"Bird's nest soup is a traditional Wind flight delicacy. Often eaten by the wealthy nobility, it is made from the saliva of the edible nest swiftlet, secreted to line their nests, hence the name. Unfortunately, with many of its original creators having moved on to other, more popular recipes, the art of creating this rare dish is slowly fading away..." ~ The Big Book of Recipes, written by Nocte

But one Zephyr Dancer is determined to keep the tradition alive. Hailing from the small flock known as Dominandi Zephyrus, Yanting first learned of the dish from an old cookbook his mother left lying around by mistake. Though he couldn't understand most of the words at the time, the beautifully-illustrated bowl of bird's nest soup on the page seemed to lodge itself in his memory, unable to be shaken as soon as he'd seen it.

With his flock's blessings, he ventured across Sornieth to collect whatever tomes he could find on the dish. Many of them agreed that only a specific breed of swiftlet would do. The so-called edible-nest swiftlet, a small dark insectivore, preferred to nest in caves, but a dark shed or barn would do. Right after compiling his reading material, Yanting set off to track down and catch some birds for his collection.

Like the Pied Piper of legend, Yanting tamed the swiftlets and led them on an epic migration across the continent. Dragons would stop and stare as the Zephyr Dancer flew past, followed closely by a swarm of tiny birds. He returned to the Zephyr Steppes and here built his own wooden house: An artificial cave for them to build their nests. Invoking a spell he'd learned from the tomes, he enchanted the shed to play birdsong at all hours, compelling the swiftlets to stay and build their nests. Within a few weeks, dozens of cup-shaped nests formed along the walls and beams.

"It is best served in a simple soup, using only the simplest of ingredients. Water, dried bird's nest, and a pinch of salt should be boiled to form a flavourful broth."

To have been considered a delicacy, bird's nest soup must have been incredibly hard to cook, right?

Wrong! It turns out, the harvesting had always been the hard part. Making the soup itself was little more than boiling everything together in a pot. With his first harvest, Yanting cooked up a batch to try. It was everything the cookbooks said it would be: Thick, subtly savoury, with the bird's nest itself reduced to soft gelatinous strands that slurped up like noodles. It was in that moment that he knew, he had to share this tradition with all of Sornieth.

So that's exactly what he's been doing. He may have settled down in a new clan, far from his family and home, but he's taken his birds with him, and tends their house in a small patch within their territory. He's been stocking up their nests every season, carefully packaging them the way the books said to, keeping them fresh for years. He hopes to sell them to other clans; in addition to earning his keep, he's spreading the word that bird's nest soup is back in production.

Maybe one day, he'll expand his empire to rival even the factories of the Ashfall Wastes. But that day is a long time in coming. For now, Yanting has kept it a personal business, one he'd like to share with a mate and offspring. But he's patient about it; after all, it's a Wind dragon's very nature to travel and tell stories. And as long as he lives, so too will he keep these stories alive.
