Midnight, with her scales as dark as a tropical sea at night, had no trouble becoming a night hunter. She traveled alone, with nobody to talk to or befriend, so hunting soon became her favorite - and only - thing to do. Every night she would lie beneath a tree, counting the prey she had caught earlier that day, and then eat. Every dinner was a feast for her, and she was mostly happy exactly where she was.

Time passed, and Midnight began to feel lonely. All she encountered every day was prey and more prey and sometimes, the odd and faint shadow of a passing dragon. She never seemed to encounter the dragons, though.
Then, one perfectly normal night, Midnight’s small but accurate ears sensed something rustling in the trees. Her hunting instincts quickly recognized it as prey and she swiveled around slowly to see what it was. The creature was a stripy purple zeeba, nothing new to Midnight, but what was so different about this zeeba was that its entire body seemed to be shining and sparkling. It was so mesmerizing that Midnight stomped after it when it ran away in terror, crushing anything that was crushable that got in her way and being very, very loud, which scared all the prey away.

After around an hour of chasing the sparkling zeeba, the sun began to rise and Midnight saw what the zeeba had unintentionally led her to. It was a whole herd of sparkly, shiny zeebas, all different colors of the rainbow. Some were as bright yellow as dandelions, some were light, calm shades of pink and others were as deep blue as Midnight herself, all shining so brightly and wearing ridiculous masks and capes.
Midnight was amazed, but her hunter instincts took over again and her brain screamed prey, prey, kill, kill, over and over again, and so Midnight began to chase after the poor zeeba herd until she heard a voice - she had not heard anyone’s but hers in so long - yell ‘STOP!’

She looked around, alert, to see where the panicked, furious voice was coming from. Ah, to her right. Midnight started to turn and face the stranger, a light blue-green Wildclaw with beautiful yellow ribbons weaved around his wings and torso.

"Stranger.” He greeted Midnight, his voice cold and furious. “Explain yourself. What are you doing to my zeebas?”
Midnight felt scared inside, but tried not to show it - instead, she stood tall and tried to look fierce. “I’m sorry, are these yours?” She asked. “I’m just so used to hunting prey. My instincts must have took over. I didn’t mean to harm your zeebas.”
The fact that Midnight mentioned her hunter status seemed to annoy the Wildclaw even more. “Are you sure?” He pressed.
Midnight nodded. “I might be a hunter, but I would never harm something so beautiful. Especially when they’re wearing those beautiful costumes!” She added.
“Fine. I trust you” The Wildclaw sighed. “Just don’t think of going near my zeebas again.” He began to walk away slowly.
“Wait!” Midnight cried after him. “Where do you come from?”
The Wildclaw turned. “Why do you ask?”
“I am lonely.” Midnight replied. “The life of a lone hunter is, of course, lonely. I long for company.”
He sighed. “The Windflight Clan.” He replied. “If you wish to join me, come along. But please know that I will be watching you for a period of a time to see if you are any harm to us.”
“I promise, I am not.” Midnight insisted. “Thank you for the offer. And by the way, what is your name? I’m Midnight.” She held out a hand to shake.
The Wildclaw shook her hand. “Swiftwings,” he said. “Head hunter of my Clan, and loyal friend to my leader Moonbeam.”

And so Midnight said her farewells to the cover of the forest and followed Swiftwings, her first and only possible friend, to a new and better life.
