She was quick amongst the forest trees, a flash of sunset pink amongst green. Tori knew her away around the many trunks and branches, knowing her home to be a familiar and welcoming maze. The whistle of the wind caressed her ears and told her to carry on, keep flying no matter what happens.
They were comforting words once, but now they were warnings.
Another dragon was following her. A Coatl, with similar colors, smudged by the darkness of the wild escape. Tori knew what he was by the quiver on his side. A marksman. A hunter.
She panicked, having been quick to discover what his target was. She was a shadow unmasked and obvious, save for the scattered petals that tried to keep her company. He was gaining on her. It wouldn’t be long until -
He somehow stopped in front of her. She skidded to a stop, cowering beneath his gaze, dark as the earth below. His bow was not drawn, his arrows untouched. He simply stared. She simply waited for her fate.
He eventually whispered in a voice that scratched with the rockiness of the western mountains.
“They said the Gladekeeper had a chosen one. I never expected them to be so beautiful.”
