hope has nightmares, sometimes. they all do, with the things they’ve done, but his are-
don’t worry, idol, he murmurs, still half asleep, facedown in the scraps of caravan roof that they’ve been using as a blanket, i can take him.
the next night, idol is startled awake by the sound of euphoria stifling a yelp. hope’s advancing on nothing, miming a fight with the blade in his hand still sheathed. his eyes are closed, but even still he looks desperate- and then he stops.
looks down.
wraps trembling fingers around— nothing, there’s nothing there, but it’s all too easy to imagine the shaft of a spear, the quiet, grim expression on the face of the mirror who put it there.
and he collapses, and doesn’t wake up until morning, and doesn’t remember a minute of it.

meiju and suvas share everything- their father’s eyes, their papa’s smile, their food on nights where they can only find one corpse untouched by scavengers-
their nightmares.
the fae seems kind, at first. they both know it’s temporary, of course, because this is a killing game, that they’re trapped in, but for once they dare to hope (hah.) that meiju’s declaration of truce will stand and the fae will at least shed a tear when some other natural disaster kills them.
(and it’s always them. if they go, they’ll go together. this is a fact.)
shh, whispers the fae, i’m sorry, i’m sorry, i have to do this, and meiju sees the look in his eyes and asks him if he has a sister and he says that he did. once. and he smiles bittersweet like dark chocolate, and tries to bring his blade down, and is stopped by a spear to the gut.
we go together or not at all, snarls suvas, and the fae nods like he understands, and lists sideways and at last fades away into candlesmoke. together or not at all, and for the next two nights that’s how it is.
they wake at the same time, and then hunt, and go to sleep at the same time and are hunted.
and then meiju wakes up.
adrenaline washes through him, the product of a successful hunt. the old blood in his veins, from his papa’s ancestors, scream in triumph for the preservation of life, and he turns to his sister to embrace her because they did it, they won—
brother, she hums, happy, her eyes still closed, i’ve been looking for you everywhere,
and he watches as she reaches a hand up towards the thing she must think is him, and a strangled gasp escapes her and her other hand goes to claw at her throat, and she wakes up sobbing but that’s alright because so is he.
together or not at all, he gasps wetly into her shoulder, and he rips the golden necklace he woke up wearing into two pieces with his bare hands and ties her half into her braid, and they walk together in the morning as the victors, of whatever that was, and they hunt and try not to think of what happens in nightmares.
