Dark and slightly cloudy twilight. The last sunlights were disappearing from the sky, leaving a graying-purple luminescence. Above, there was some small flashes between the clouds (hints of thunders) and the air was dry and agressive, as if the atmosphere was charged with electricity. But it couldn't be otherwise in the Shifting Expanse.
Two figures were flying through the stormy sky. Two dragons. One was big but thin, it had to be an imperial; the other had half the size of their companion, but flew with double the effort, trying to keep near. He talked with a kind of musical voice, a variety of tones used in a single phrase. Coatl language.
Suddenly, the imperial called the coatl and pointed to the land. He watched, and noticed it too: it was a group of dragons, not that little but neither really large. Some were sitting around a bonfire, others were setting up improvised beds or sleeping already. They looked messy, but not hostile.
The travelers landed near the fire, under the watchful eyes of the dragons of the clan. The outlanders spoke: they had been flying for days, looking for a place to lay their nest. The date was close though, and they wanted to stay with the clan, thus having their protection in these unknown plains.
The dragons of the clan exchanged silent looks, before nodding gently.
A representative was sent to help the couple with the nest-setting and anything else they could need. It was a nocturne, pretty friendly, but respectful too. She explained to the guests that the clan started traveling to the Carrion Canyon, looking for a new location when their old lair became too small for their current number.
In turn, the travelers told her about themselves. Her name was Aria, and his, Aluel. They belonged to a clan of the Viridian Labyrinth, but they wanted to nest in the Stormcatcher’s domains, so their childrens would have Lightning as flight.
The imperial mother laid her nest that same night. Five days passed, and in the dawn of the sixth day, the eggs cracked.
The dragons of the lightning clan gladly congratulated the parents, while the two imperial hatchlings opened their cyan eyes.
The viridians seemed calmer though… maybe even not as interested in their daughters? Well, they had many children before, they were used to that.
In the afternoon, the couple and their hatchlings were ready to start the trip back home. The mother Aria put her daughters in her back, and next to Aluel thanked the clan that had helped them. Then they took off, flying to the now uncloudy sky.
The nocturne casually commented that they wanted a boy child. But anyway, these girls would be loved. Happy ending.
Aria looked to Aluel, soaring next to her in the air. He looked back at her: his glance was determined. The imperial understood.
They were seeking for something special, and they would keep trying until they got it.
