Cinder was born from smoke and ash, unlike the other Fire Lords. They were born of pure fire and lava, their veins flowed with the lava they were born from. Cinder's veins flowed with lava just the same, but they would never believe him.

"Hide your feelings,
Hide your wings,
Hide anything and everything weak.

Never let them know what you really think."

He understood what would happen if he didn't hide his inner thoughts and emotions. He'd be cast aside by the rest of the Fire Lords and left for dead, his metallic wings and the banner that showed he meant something would be taken away.

He would never let it happen, despite how much he wished to show his beautiful wings, he wouldn't. He couldn't. Instead Cinder protected them by hiding them behind beautiful fire red metallic sheaths that reminded those who looked at them of lava.

When you're born from smoke and ash, you have to pave your own way in the world, so he did.
